The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on May 15, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by mistakes. Everyone makes them, and sometimes they win the Pro Tour shortly thereafter.

What You Might Have Missed This Weekend

  1. Pro Tour Amonkhet

I mean, I hope you didn’t miss the Pro Tour this weekend. I suppose it’s possible you were trapped under a rock, or maybe your first child was being born, or maybe you were too busy winning the whole thing to watch any coverage (Gerry). If you did miss it, here are the best links to catch up:

Those will get you caught up on the newsy parts, but there are a few pieces that showcase the people that are worth reading as well. Like…

  1. Family Fans | Wizards of the Coast | Corbin Hosler

Corbin, king of the Magic profile pieces that tug at your heartstrings, goes straight for them in this profile piece on the family of Brand Nelson and Corey Baumeister.

  1. Teeming With Hope | Wizards of the Coast | Corbin Hosler

Corbin again, though this one is a touch less, well, touching and more of an uplifting look at the Pro Tour Team Series, specifically Team MTG Mint Card.

  1. What does a Magic art director do? | Cynthia Sheppard

Now for something totally unrelated to the Pro Tour. Well, mostly unrelated—the cards played there still do have art on them, after all. Cynthia Sheppard, Magic Art Director extraordinaire, was recently nominated for a Chesley award for Best Art Director. In the art world, that’s a pretty big deal—but it also requires some explanation for anyone not in the art world. So she does that. The explanation, that is.

After That, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. What We Did Wrong at Pro Tour Amonkhet | ChannelFireball | Paulo Vitor Damo Da Rosa

PVDDR reflects on his team’s testing process and what went wrong for Channel Fireball Ice. They put Eric Froehlich into the Top 8, but the rest of the team floundered. Hear Paulo’s take on why.

  1. Pro Tour Amonkhet: By the Numbers | MTGGoldfish | SaffronOlive

This is the earliest, most comprehensive analysis you’ll find online of how various archetypes performed at the Pro Tour. It’s a Spike’s dream, basically.

  1. Magic: The Gathering - Everybody Makes Mistakes | Elantris

This is great. A bevy of Pros and Pro-adjacent players talk about their worst plays on camera. Gerry Thompson Grasp of Darknessing a 4/5 for no effect not included. He won, so we can joke about it.

What People Are Talking About (Mostly Gerry Thompson)

The love of Gerry T showed through as he crept closer and closer to his first Pro Tour title (in his second Pro Tour Top 8). The congratulations poured in from all corners of the internet. You can view a clip of his winner’s interview here.

There was also a ton of love for Christian Calcano, a dedicated player who earned his first Pro Tour Top 8, and capped it with an emotional interview.

Deck of the Day

  1. Gerry Thompson’s Pro Tour Amonkhet Championship Mono Black Zombies

Congratulations to Gerry Thompson, purveyor of 22 basic Swamps and Champion of Pro Tour Amonkhet!
