Always Good!

Sam Black is a Platinum Pro Player and longtime writer for StarCityGames.com. He is a respected deck builder and took over Daily Decks for the first half of 2013.

I write all the decks for each week during the previous week. Right now, I'm on a plane on my way to Pro Tour Gatecrash in Montreal.

Earlier this week, Zac Hill helped us prepare and suggested a deck that contained one main-deck Appetite for Brains. In the Facebook message where he suggested it, he wrote "(Always good!)" after the card in the decklist. Appetite for Brains is basically the definition of a card that isn't always good, but his point was that it's a card you're happy to have one of against most decks in Standard right now. Still, while his point was clear, the statement was amusingly inaccurate, and something the house joked about a lot in the following days.

Jund, on the other hand, really does seem to always be good these days, and Jund aficionados Reid Duke and Owen Turtenwald spent days tuning Jund for this Pro Tour to come up with the list they and Ben Seck would play at the event.

I suggested trying Arbor Elf in an attempt to mirror the strength of Deathrite Shaman in Modern (although obviously less powerful), with access to Underworld Connections in the sideboard. They liked the idea, and that was my one contribution to the deck, although I hope it ends up being a significant help to them.

Jund is, as always, a fair midrange deck that just plays a wide variety of powerful creatures and Planeswalkers that inherently generate card advantage and efficient removal. It's basically just the dream Limited deck.
