Bant Spirits

When Gavin Verhey was eleven, he dreamt of a job making Magic cards—and now as a Magic designer, he's living his dream! Gavin has been writing about Magic since 2005.

Pro Tour Avacyn Restored happened last weekend, bringing several of Magic's best players out of the woodwork to compete. Team StarCityGames Black put a lot of effort into the format—and was rewarded with one of the best-performing decks at the tournament. Renowned deck builder Sam Black hit a home run yet again, as his Bant Spirits deck pushed professional player Gaudenis Vidugiris and legendary Pro Tour Hall of Fame member Jon Finkel into the Top 8 in Barcelona.

This deck takes advantage of some of Innistrad's difficult-to-deal-with creatures. Four copies of Invisible Stalker and Geist of Saint Traft form the core plan to victory. Filled to the brim with ways to enhance these creatures such as Increasing Savagery, Wolfir Silverheart, and even Spectral Flight, a huge hexproof creature can take down an opponent in no time.

Of course, if that doesn't pan out as expected, the deck is full of ways to buy you time—or just outpower the opponent! Dungeon Geists and Silent Departure set opponents back, and Strangleroot Geist can convincingly play both offense and defense. Wolfir Silverheart doesn't need a hexproof creature to be good either—presenting 12 points of power to the board is quite often more than enough!

But you don't need to take my word for it—you can listen to Sam Black talk about the deck's power himself! Take a look at his deck tech below, and feel free to look through the Pro Tour Avacyn Restored archives to read more about this deck's dominance at the tournament!
