Vela Commander

When Gavin Verhey was eleven, he dreamt of a job making Magic cards—and now as a Magic designer, he's living his dream! Gavin has been writing about Magic since 2005.

In addition to showing off plenty of exciting new planes and phenomena cards, Planechase (2012 Edition) also released a wide variety of exciting legendary creatures into the wild! Commander columnist Cassidy Silver has his eye on one in particular: Vela the Night-Clad. This blue-black creature featured in the Night of the Ninja deck has some exciting interactions on the Commander stage—and Cassidy looks to take advantage of them!

Vela works particularly well with Ninjas, hitting each opponent for 1 every time you use ninjutsu. Considering that with multiple ninjas you can constantly return unblocked Ninjas to your hand and then re-ninjutsu them, your opponent is in for one big hit to the life total! Plenty of sweet unblockable or shadow creatures from throughout Magic's history take a center stage, allowing your Ninjas to consistently connect.

But Cassidy takes it a step further than just Ninja tricks as the Planechase deck prescribed. For example, Deadeye Navigator causes a particularly brutal combo alongside Vela, causing each opponent to lose 2 life for every time you pay ! Crystal Shard lets you return your creatures turn after turn, reusing their effects and making your opponent lose some life in the process.

Take a look at Cassidy's decklist below and draw some inspiration from it for yourself! Which Planechase (2012 Edition) legends will you try building around? Take a look over the full list!
