Modern Masters 2017 Edition comes to Magic Online on March 22. Events will last through April 12. Boosters for the set will be available for purchase at $6.99 in the Magic Online store during the same period. For more information on the exciting cards you can open in Modern Masters 2017, check out the Card Image Gallery!

Modern Masters 2017 Edition Events

Ready to draft the new set on Magic Online? We'll be offering two different options for you. First is the Modern Masters 2017 Intermediate Draft, which has a structure similar to the Intermediate Draft currently available for Aether Revolt and Kaladesh. If you're more interested in the Draft experience than the cards, you might prefer the Modern Masters 2017 Phantom Draft. This draft has a smaller entry, but the cards you draft won't be added to your collection.

In the past, we have offered Sealed events as well, but given the low attendance at Modern Masters sealed events in the past, as well as that Magic R&D designed the set explicitly for a drafting experience, we are focusing our Modern Masters 2017 Edition Limited offerings on Draft. We hope you have fun drafting the new set!

Constructed Event Changes

Since I've been in my role with Magic Online, we have improved Constructed prizes on Magic Online with the introduction of Play Points and again later with the addition of Magic Online Treasure Chests. Much of this is because Constructed prizes in the form of boosters ties them to the Limited format, and this has shown to have negative effects on the Magic Online economy. This has especially been true when formats like Modern Masters are available. Constructed players would have trouble trading the main set boosters they won because many Limited players were more interested in the alternative offerings.

Based on these trends, we are removing boosters from Constructed events starting March 22 and adding more treasure chests to prizes instead. Friendly Constructed Leagues and two-player queues already don't award boosters and won't be changing. Competitive Constructed Leagues as well as Vintage Daily Events will remove boosters and add Treasure Chests as follows:

Competitive Constructed Leagues

  • Entry Options:
    • 12 Event Tickets
    • 120 Play Points
  • Structure: Up to 5 matches, played at your convenience
  • Prizes:
    • 5 wins: 16 Treasure Chests + 180 Play Points + 3 QPs
    • 4 wins: 8 Treasure Chests + 180 Play Points + 1 QP
    • 3 wins: 1 Treasure Chest + 120 Play Points

Vintage Daily Events

  • Entry Options:
    • 12 Event Tickets
    • 120 Play Points
  • Structure: 4 Swiss rounds
  • Prizes:
    • 4 wins: 13 Treasure Chests + 180 Play Points + 3 QPs
    • 3 wins: 7 Treasure Chests + 180 Play Points + 1 QP

Treasure Chest Changes

There will also be some Treasure Chest updates effective March 22 with the Modern Masters 2017 release. As Magic Online designer Alli Medwin announced, cards with the monarch mechanic from Conspiracy: Take the Crown will be added to the C16/CN2 slot in Treasure Chests. The added cards are:
