Hour of Devastation comes to Magic Online July 10!

Posted in Magic Online on June 29, 2017

By Lee Sharpe

Like Amonkhet before, Hour of Devastation will be available on Magic Online on July 10, the day after paper Preleases in your local game store. Hour of Devastation will feature our usual complement of Draft, Sealed, and Constructed Leagues!

You can see the full details below!

Timeline

Events will change as follows:

  • July 5: Commander 1v1 Banned-List Change Announcement
  • July 5 Downtime: Hour of Devastation Build
    • Constructed Leagues end and are recreated for the new set
    • Commander and Commander 1v1 split into two different formats/banned lists
    • Commander 1v1 banned-list changes implemented
    • Hour of Devastation cards become Constructed-legal
  • July 8-9: Play in Hour of Devastation Prereleases in Your local game store
  • July 10: Hour of Devastation Events Begin on Magic Online at 8 a.m. Pacific Time
    • Amonkhet-only Limited events end
    • Vintage Cube events end
  • July 11: Team Draft Super League begins at 6 p.m. Pacific Time
    • Exciting look at HOU-HOU-AKH draft
    • Team Channel Fireball (Luis Scott-Vargas, Ben Stark, and Eric Froehlich) vs. Team Limited Resources (Marshall Sutcliffe, Kenji Egashira, and Paul Cheon)

New to Magic Online Events

We currently offer Phantom Draft and Standard queues for new player events. We weren't satisfied with the Standard experience and are replacing that queue with the New to Magic Online Standard Gauntlet. This is a two-player queue where you'll use a random Planeswalker Deck and be paired against an opponent also using a Planeswalker Deck.

The cards in the deck won't be added to your collection, but you'll get to look over it for a few minutes and then play a match. The event details for these events are unchanged. Each player will join the queue with 2 New Play Points, and the player who wins the match will receive 5 Play Points.

Hopefully these new events will allow players to get used to Magic Online's interface in a Constructed match without requiring you to have gotten a deck together in advance!

Prestige Avatars

During Hour of Devastation season (starting July 5 for constructed and July 10 for limited), you'll be able to earn these prestige avatars by earning enough trophies in leagues on Magic Online. You can earn the Silver, Gold, and Mythic avatars as follows:

These prestige avatars can be earned in any of the following ways for Hour of Devastation season:

  • Silver Prestige Avatar— Samut, The Tested
    • 5 trophies in the Friendly Hour of Devastation / Amonkhet Draft League
    • 5 trophies in the Friendly Hour of Devastation / Amonkhet Sealed League
    • 2 trophies in any single Friendly Constructed League
  • Gold Prestige Avatar— The Locust God
    • 4 trophies in the Competitive Hour of Devastation / Amonkhet Draft League
    • 4 trophies in the Competitive Hour of Devastation / Amonkhet Sealed League
    • 4 trophies in any single Competitive Constructed League
  • Mythic Prestige Avatar— Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh
    • 12 trophies in the Competitive Hour of Devastation / Amonkhet Draft League
    • 6 trophies in the Competitive Hour of Devastation / Amonkhet Sealed League
    • 6 trophies in any single Competitive Constructed League

Finishing with six or more wins in any single MOCS Monthly event during Hour of Devastation season

Below is the list of changes coming to Curated List in Magic Online Treasure Chests with Hour of Devastation. Note that the changes listed only apply to the specific version of the card listed, and other versions are either listed separately or unaffected. An Old Frequency Ratio of 0 indicates a card that is being added to the curated list, while a New Frequency Ratio of 0 indicates a card that is being removed. The "MS3" cards being added are the Masterpieces from Hour of Devastation.

Treasure Chest Changes

Note: As you can see below, Aetherworks Marvel is being added to the curated list. Unfortunately, the treasure chest contents for this update needed to be determined before the decision to ban Aetherworks Marvel in Standard was made. Obviously, it would not have been put in the curated list knowing that the card was banned. It will be removed from the curated list in a future update. In the meantime, if you open an Aetherworks Marvel in a treasure chest, contact our Game Support team, and they will supply you with a replacement treasure chest.
