The term "format" refers to different ways to play Magic. The two most common formats are Constructed and Limited. In Constructed, you bring a pre-built deck of cards. Limited formats require you to start which a certain number of unopened packs and then build your deck on the spot. Each different format has specific rules of what cards are allowed, and some have special rules that add to the fun and excitement of the game!
BANNED AND RESTRICTED CARDS
Depending on the format you're playing, some cards are banned (not allowed at all) or restricted (you're only allowed to play one copy). Bans and restrictions help keep a format balanced, allowing for many different types of deck styles to be competitive. The banned and restricted lists also change as new cards are released. Check out what cards are banned and restricted, and what sets of cards are allowed in your favorite formats!
The Comprehensive Rules of Magic is a reference document that holds all of the rules and possible corner cases found in Magic. It is NOT meant to be read beginning to end; instead it's meant to be consulted when specific rules questions come into play.
