Tom "The Boss" Ross is a man who marches to the beat of his own drum. Tom routinely finds success with off-the-wall decks and strategies. Recently, Tom won the StarCityGames Invitational with a deck unlike any other in the Standard format.

26. 25. 24. 24. 24. 26. 26. 17.

Those are the land counts of each of the decks in the Top 8 of this tournament. Tom played seventeen, a full seven lands fewer than the next lowest.

That has drastic implications in terms of how the deck operates. To function with seventeen lands, Tom is comfortable operating from one and two lands frequently. Counting the bloodrush on Rubblebelt Maaka, Tom's deck has a whopping 33 cards that can be played for a single red mana. Some Standard decks have no one-mana cards at all!

In order to get enough cheap red cards to fill out a deck, Tom had to dig deep into the Standard format and pull out many surprises. Akroan Crusader, Titan's Strength, Blinding Flare, and Seismic Stomp are not cards commonly seen in Constructed decks, but Tom made it work en route to winning the StarCityGames Invitational.
