Abzan at GP Madrid

Shuhei Nakamura is a member of the Pro Tour Hall of Fame, former Player of the Year, and is one of just six players with more than 400 lifetime pro points.

Hand destruction backed up by Tarmogoyf and Liliana of the Veil has more or less established itself as a royal road to victory in Modern. Looking back on the past year, the metagame has been defined by Jund, Rock, Abzan, and other variations on the theme. The latest trend in BG decks, as exampled here in Marcio's Abzan deck from GP Madrid, is to include the powerhouse that is Siege Rhino.

Siege Rhino—truly a masterpiece of design. Lifegain is a good match for the Modern environment where the popular decks feature burn, and having trample essentially nullifies those annoying chump blockers. Plus, it has high immunity to most of the creature removal popular in the format—it doesn't die to Lightning Bolt, it costs four and therefore sneers at Smother and Abrupt Decay, and since it's black it brushes aside Terror and its myriad clones. Pretty much the only thing that can get rid of it is Path to Exile, but then, everyone has an Achilles heel.
