Angel Pod at GP Madrid

Shuhei Nakamura is a member of the Pro Tour Hall of Fame, former Player of the Year, and is one of just six players with more than 400 lifetime pro points.

While it was overwhelmed in the news by the 4,000-player Grand Prix New Jersey held the same weekend, Grand Prix Madrid was no slouch with 1,900 players participating—1,900 players!

More importantly, Madrid was run using one of the same formats that will be on display at next week's World Championship: Modern. For the next few days, we'll be looking at some of the top decks from Madrid. First off is Kevin Grove's Birthing Pod deck, the archetype most represented in that event's Top 8.

While we talk about "Birthing Pod decks" a lot, there are in fact a lot of variations on the deck. What they have in common is a decent number of mana creatures, plus a large variety of creatures. Obviously, they all have the eponymous card. Finally, there is usually some form of "infinite" combo, which is triggered off of two or three different creatures, such as Restoration Angel and Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, or Melira, Sylvok Outcast plus Viscera Seer and creature with persist.

The combo in this version is an infinite life combo, achieved through the combination of Spike Feeder and Archangel of Thune. But, as you can see from the list, that's just a side dish. The main dish of this deck is actually midrange beatdown. I personally like this sort of deck, where there is a game-winning strategy separate from the combo. If you manage to get the combo, great, but the deck can still function without it.
