One of the more interesting decks I saw from RPTQ Weekend was Victor Yee's Mardu Planeswalkers. This deck brought back some memories for me because I played a very similar deck at Pro Tour Khans of Tarkir. While the deck was really fun to play, it did have a major flaw: The deck was great at keeping the game under control, but wasn't so good at finishing a game in a timely manner.

If you take a look at this list, it's pretty low on win conditions. Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker aside, the win conditions it does play aren't exactly fast ones. Things have changed a lot in the past six months. We are in a new timeline and dragons are now ruling Tarkir. Mardu Planeswalkers are actually a really well positioned metagame, full of five- and six-mana Dragons.

Silumgar, the Drifting Death is one of the hardest cards to remove from the battlefield right now due to hexproof. With Esper Dragons being one of Standard's top decks, it makes spells like Crackling Doom pretty appealing. Typically, an Esper player will tap out for a Dragon on turn six, meaning that Crackling Doom is pretty easy to resolve. Besides the three mana edict, this Mardu list is full of hard-to-deal-with Planeswalkers that gain you card advantage every turn, giving you inevitability against a control deck.

The options for creature removal in this deck are great. Hero's Downfall and Bile Blight are some of the most powerful spells in Standard and a great reason to play black, and End Hostilities is good at sweeping a horde of Goblin tokens. It made me sad that Mardu Midrange hadn't seen much play since Pro Tour Khans of Tarkir as it was one of my favorite decks, and it's good to see it climb back to a reasonable place in the metagame.
