Bant Legions

Posted in Daily Deck on February 8, 2014

Today's deck takes a lot of pieces from various strategies, hoping to get an advantage in Standard. It also looks pretty sweet.

Assemble the LegionBant Control isn't a new thing, but splashing Assemble the Legion into that shell is. ChannelFireballers Josh Utter-Leyton and David Ochoa splashed Assemble the Legion into their White-Blue Control deck at Grand Prix Vancouver to marginal success. Adding another color seems ambitious, so it's got to provide you with a good reason to do so.

At first glance, Sylvan Caryatid and Supreme Verdict might seem like a nonbo. However, if you play Sylvan Caryatid against Mono-Red Aggro, the Red player is encouraged to overextend into your sweeper. Against control, Caryatid gives you a leg up in the mana department, which is always a benefit. Post-board, Mistcutter Hydra can hold off a Mono-Blue army, but I imagine its main purpose is attacking Planeswalkers in pseudo-mirrors.

Fog, while much maligned, is very powerful with Sphinx's Revelation and/or Planeswalkers. Some Bant Control decks played it to good success last season, so I'm not surprised by its inclusion here. The pair of Selesnya Charms round out the green portion of the deck, but it is the green card I'm least convinced about.

At the end of the day, you shouldn't be afraid of going against the norm and trying out new strategies or an amalgam of existing strategies. You might just find something that is fun and powerful!
