Best of 2013: Danish Control

For years, Thomas Enevoldsen has been claiming that Death and Taxes is one of the best decks in Legacy. He's put up plenty of solid results, but the deck never had more than a cult following. After Thomas's 1st-place finish at Grand Prix Strasbourg (and his teammate Michael Bonde's Top 4 with the same deck), Death and Taxes was finally on the list of "decks to beat." It even won the Legacy Championship later in the year.

"Mono-White Control," as Thomas calls it, alludes to the true nature of this disruptive aggressive deck. In most games, the disruptive part of the deck is far more important than the aggressive part. Beatdown with small creatures will only get you so far in Legacy, but "taxing" their mana with Wasteland; Rishadan Port; and Thalia, Guardian of Thraben will do wonders.

As is true with nearly every deck featuring white mana, it also contains Swords to Plowshares, for coverage against nearly every creature threat in the format, and Stoneforge Mystic, a card that is capable of winning games on its own. The Karakas plus Mangara of Corondor combo dominates the late game or hoses strategies like Sneak and Show.

Overall, this "White Weenie" deck is much more than a pile of Grizzly Bears. If you expect Death and Taxes but have never played against it, I highly recommend that you do so. If you're looking for a fun, powerful, interactive deck for Legacy, then this is probably it.
