Challenging Common Wisdom

Azorius Charm, Supreme Verdict, Sphinx's Revelation, Detention Sphere. Those have been the pillars of white-blue-based control decks for the entirety of their existence in Standard. If you want to play White-Blue Control, with or without a splash, don't leave home without those cards.

Apparently, Jim Davis didn't get the memo. Jim built a deck without format staple Detention Sphere or its Journey into Nyx cousin, Banishing Light. The reason for this is twofold. First, with all three sets of Theros block in Standard, enchantments are at an all-time high. This means that enchantment removal is also more prevalent, and Detention Sphere is not the permanent removal spell it once was. You can see the increased amount of enchantment removal in a main-deck Deicide.

The other major reason Jim cut Detention Sphere is that he wanted to play Planar Cleansing. Planar Cleansing would destroy any Detention Spheres in play, unlocking the permanents that he wanted to remove in the first place! Another powerful card that is enabled by removing Detention Sphere is Renounce the Guilds. Many of Standard's strongest permanents are multicolored, including Blood Baron of Vizkopa, Reaper of the Wilds, and a variety of Planeswalkers.

Sometimes, challenging common wisdom can have its rewards!
