Commander Black-Green Skullbriar

Welcome to Commander Week on Daily Decks! This week I'll be showcasing some of Magic R&D's favorite Commander decks. Today we're going to take a look at Mark Globus's favorite deck, utilizing Skullbriar, the Walking Grave. Mark is a Game Design Architect at Wizards of the Coast, and was hired back in 2006 after performing well on The Great Designer Search.

Mark has always enjoyed playing Golgari in Commander, because it has great versatility. With mass removal, strong creatures, and lots of ways to generate card advantage, Golgari really has a lot going for it in Commander. Mark's deck is much more focused than your typical Golgari Deck, creating +1/+1 counters everywhere. His commander, Skullbriar, the Walking Grave, was actually designed by Mark when he was leading the Development Team for Magic's first Commander product.

Skullbriar is a very powerful Commander, and it makes many players nervous. Since Commander is usually played in a multiplayer setting, the odds are good that at least one player is defenseless when Skullbriar enters the battlefield. Skullbriar can get out of hand very quickly, and its Commander damage can threaten to take over a game. There are even ways to give it trample (Rancor is my personal favorite), so chump blocking suddenly becomes impossible.

Back in March, there was a major change to the Commander rules. Previously, a Commander would return to its owner's hand or be shuffled into its owner's library if a spell like Unsummon or Oblation were cast. Now, if a Commander would go into your library or hand, you can choose to put it in your command zone as a replacement effect. This rules change made Skullbriar even more powerful, as its counters will stay on it as long as you choose to return it to your command zone.

Mark's deck is full of attrition. Every card in the deck gives you value in some way, whether it's killing a lot of permanents at once, giving your creatures more +1/+1 counters than your opponents can handle, or even something as simple as allowing you to put extra lands into play. Cards like this really shine in multiplayer. Every card has to be impactful when you are playing against multiple opponents, and this deck is full of that.
