Today on Daily Decks, we're going to take a look at Ethan Fleischer's Reki, the History of Kamigawa Commander deck. Ethan is a Game Designer in R&D; he started at Wizards about five years ago after winning The Great Designer Search 2.

Magic players have a bittersweet relationship with legendary permanents. Some players love them because they represent exceptional characters in Magic's history. Other players hate them because you can only have one copy on the battlefield at a time. If legendary permanents are so cool and we are only allowed to have one in play at a time, it seems like Commander is the perfect format for them!

Ethan's calls his Legendary deck "completely adorable," as it's a very unusual strategy in Commander, and the commander himself is a very weak card on his own. The deck works by playing mana creatures such as Elvish Mystic and Fyndhorn Elves in the early turns, and then playing Reki, the History of Kamigawa as early as turn two. Once he's on the battlefield, the card advantage just keeps flowing. Reki lets you draw a card every time you play a legendary spell—and practically every spell in this deck is legendary! One thing that's really cool about Reki is his trigger condition happens when you cast the spell, not when it resolves. So even if your stuff gets countered, you still get to draw a card.

"Get in, loser."

Another interesting thing about this deck is that the card choices are extremely unique. I've been playing Magic for eighteen years, and I still had to look most of these cards up on Gatherer to see what they did. I mean, there weren't really a lot of Hua Tuo, Honored Physicians or Meng Huo, Barbarian Kings being played in tournaments. I also hadn't considered how many legendary artifacts exist in Magic.

Ethan enjoys building decks that encourage him to run cards he might otherwise overlook. There are just so many obscure cards in Magic, and Ethan's Commander deck is proof that every Magic card has a home. Ethan is still hoping to fit more sweet legendary creatures in his deck. He's is looking forward to trying out Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Thrun, the Last Troll, and maybe even Lady Zhurong, Warrior Queen!
