We’re replaying some of our authors' most popular works and some of your favorites December 15–26, but don’t be surprised if we have a special present or two for you somewhere during the holidays…

But in the meantime, enjoy the best of 2014. Happy Holidays!

The basic Affinity shell is very powerful in Modern. Play as many cheap artifacts as you can, relying on a few powerful cards such as Cranial Plating, Steel Overseer, or Arcbound Ravager to do much of the heavy lifting. Yuusei Gotou felt that the deck was a little too reliant on these cards but would benefit from pulling back on the heavy artifact theme for some other hard-hitting cards.

Instead of playing cards like Arcbound Ravager or Steel Overseer that require many artifacts, Yuusei's deck focused on cards that only need a small number of artifacts to be effective. This led Yuusei to Ensoul Artifact and Shrapnel Blast. While Cranial Plating is still around, it is still a very effective card with only three or four artifacts in play.

With less burden on artifacts, Yuusei gains the ability to play nonartifact cards more liberally. Thoughtseize and Tarmogoyf are his main-deck choices, with Path to Exile and Whipflare in the sideboard. These cards provide a degree of resilience against cards that are normally potent against a classic Affinity deck. After all, no amount of Ancient Grudges will stop a Tarmogoyf from attacking you.
