Elves at Big Magic Open—Legacy

Shuhei Nakamura is a member of the Pro Tour Hall of Fame, former Player of the Year, and is one of just six players with more than 400 lifetime pro points.

Once upon a time, there was an outrageous Pro Tour in which six people out of the Top 8 were all piloting the same archetype. It wasn't Affinity and it wasn't Academy.

The deck was Elves.

It combined mana producers that could produce mana the turn they entered the battlefield (like Birchlore Rangers and Heritage Druid) and Glimpse of Nature to create more mana, draw cards, and finish the game. This combo was so powerful and so unlike anything Magic players had ever experienced, it literally divided the Pro Tour into those who were playing Elves and those who weren't.

The descendent of this deck is what Totsuka took to the Big Magic Open tournament. The deck has grown over time by adding cards it originally could not play at the time.

Elves's strength lies with its ability to suddenly produce huge amounts of mana with creatures such as Heritage Druid. However, what more can you ask for with the addition of Gaea's Cradle, which produces green mana for each creature you control?

The deck doesn't need a complicated combo with the Cradle. With only a couple of creatures it can produce enough mana to play a huge creature from Green Sun's Zenith.

It even has Natural Order, another card it couldn't play at that legendary Pro Tour. No complex math necessary. Once you have four mana, cast Natural Order, put Craterhoof Behemoth onto the battlefield and attack with a bunch of 5/5ish trampling Elves. There were even decks that ignored the Elf concept altogether and went all the way searching up Progenitus.
