Just when I thought we'd seen all the possible variations on decks, we get a surprise. When I took a look at the results of the most recent StarCityGames Open (as of the time I write this—the fourth week of November), I saw a brand-new deck. Today, we'll be examining this new variation on Jeskai, Harlan Firer's Jeskai Combo deck, which won the StarCityGames Open in Richmond.

In this column, we've already looked at numerous decks build around Jeskai Ascendancy. It's quickly established itself into two major builds, one that takes advantage of the untap effect from the enchantment, using Retraction Helix, Springleaf Drum, and zero-mana cards to create an unbounded combo that shuts out the opponent—the Jeskai Wins version—and the other that has powerful creatures backed up with burn, which is somewhat old-fashioned but still eminently gets the job done. Both of these are essential to test against should you be thinking about trying Standard.

Harlan's Jeskai Combo is a deck that sits in the middle ground between the two archetypes described above. The synergy between a token strategy and the pump ability of the Ascendancy is strong, and it almost seems unfair that token-generating spells aren't creature spells and so trigger both abilities of the Ascendancy. And naturally, you want to include creatures with prowess, because they're simply good. Add all this together and you get Jeskai Combo.

It's similar in a sense to last week's Birthing Pod deck in that if you have to categorize it, it's a combo deck, but one that has bonus value in that it's also a token beatdown deck. In fact, that aspect seems strong enough that you could probably get away with removing the infinite combo bit altogether.
