Jeskai Control at Worlds

Shuhei Nakamura is a member of the Pro Tour Hall of Fame, former Player of the Year, and is one of just six players with more than 400 lifetime pro points.

Editor’s Note: Shuhei submitted his Daily Decks before the Banned and Restricted Announcement and, as such, did not know the contents of the announcement. We still thought it was worth revisiting the format prior to the announcement.

For this deck, I would like to introduce the Jeskai (URW) Control piloted by Shaun McLaren, the only person to bring a control deck to the Modern scene at the World Championship.

Remove, counter, draw, and do it again—the archetype that won him a Pro Tour and a basic Magic strategy. The biggest deference since Pro Tour Born of the Gods is that Sphinx's Revelation has changed to Dig Through Time. There are no true beatdown decks in the format, so cards like Supreme Verdict are less reliable. Control decks end up doing a lot of one-for-one exchanges and need cards like Dig Through Time to replenish their hands for two to four mana, instead of mana-consuming Sphinx's Revelation.

The downside was that you could not play strong anti-graveyard cards such as Rest in Peace, since you wanted to use your graveyard. Without as much delve in the format, it might make a return.
