Jeff Hoogland is a player who has had quite a bit of success with under-the-radar decks. If you played against Black-Green Midrange last year or Blue-Red Faeries in Modern this year, you likely played against a Jeff Hoogland creation. Jeff is at it again, building a new deck with Journey into Nyx to help him reach the semifinals of a SCG Standard Open.

Ajani, Mentor of HeroesJeff's deck is a black-green-white deck that takes advantage of a variety of card interactions and borrows strategies from other decks. In some games, you can use Underworld Connections to draw a steady stream of removal spells. In other games, Archangel of Thune is very easy to trigger multiple times with Courser of Kruphix or Scavenging Ooze. I'm sure Jeff caught more than one opponent by surprise with Advent of the Wurm, especially as opponents did not know what to expect. Building new decks can unleash the power of uncertainty on your opponents!
