Legacy Merfolk

You don't often see tribal decks perform well in Eternal formats. Even tribes with the most synergy and strongest cards—such as Elves, Goblins, and Merfolk—are not tier 1 and are pretty easy to hate out. That didn't stop George Flete from performing extremely well with Merfolk at the Legacy Championships. George piloted his list to a Top 8 finish.

The most interesting thing about this Merfolk list is Chalice of the Void. The plan for Chalice in this deck is to cast it for one on turn two, preferably after playing an Æther Vial on turn one. While this deck does play eight one-drops, as long as you have a Vial in play you won't have to worry about the Chalice affecting you.

So why play Chalice of the Void in this deck? Aggro Control decks such as Merfolk look for ways to apply pressure early and then stop the opponent from stabilizing with either counters or discard spells. Merfolk already plays Force of Will, but Chalice of the Void also fills this role nicely. Most Legacy decks rely on one-drops to get going. Brainstorm and Ponder are some of the most-played cards in Legacy, the best removal in the format is Swords to Plowshares and Lightning Bolt, and many decks' most important cards cost one mana, like Delver of Secrets and Sensei's Divining Top.

I enjoy speculating what cards from new sets will make it into Eternal formats. So far I have seen quite a few cards from Magic Origins see play in Legacy, and Harbinger of the Tides made the list in Merfolk. Harbinger of the Tides is a two-mana Merfolk, which makes it a perfect fit. It's a great creature that gives you tempo—which is exactly what this deck wants. You won't be casting it with flash very often because you will usually be doing more important things with your mana, but Vialing it in at instant speed can be devastating against some decks.
