Legacy Storm

Today's deck is an archetype that's been around for a while and continues to be successful today. Storm makes use of the namesake mechanic that originally appeared in Scourge. The deck initially appeared years ago, and the deck continues to be powerful today as it keeps evolving with new sets.

Storm works by casting many Ritual effects, or spells that add additional mana to your mana pool, such as Dark Ritual and Cabal Ritual. Once you've cast a lot of Rituals, your next step is to cast either a Past in Flames (or an Infernal Tutor to find the Past in Flames) or your win condition, Tendrils of Agony. Past in Flames allows you to recast those Rituals, adding even more mana to your mana pool while continuing to generate a higher and higher storm count. Eventually you will have cast enough spells to achieve a lethal Tendrils of Agony.

The key card in this deck is Lion's Eye Diamond. While this card looks like it doesn't do very much, as you have to discard your entire hand to use it, it actually has amazing synergy with both Past in Flames and Infernal Tutor. If you cast Infernal Tutor and then sacrifice your Lion's Eye Diamond in response, you will have hellbent when the spell resolves and you can search for any card in your deck. You can then cast it with that three mana from your Lion's Eye Diamond. Past in Flames works in a similar way, in that you can cast the Past and then sacrifice your Lion's Eye Diamond in response, which will then fill your graveyard up with a bunch of spells to cast.

A new addition to Storm from Magic Origins is Dark Petition. It's very easy to achieve spell mastery with this deck, so Dark Petition can act as another Infernal Tutor. With Demonic Tutor being banned in Legacy, Dark Petition is a great replacement.

Storm looks like it's a very all-or-nothing deck, but it's actually pretty resilient. Cantrip spells such as Ponder and Brainstorm help you sculpt the perfect hand, while Cabal Therapy helps you get past counterspells or other cards that can disrupt your combo.
