A Legendary Land

From Friday Night Magic to the Pro Tour, Adam Prosak loves all types of tournament Magic. Currently, Adam is working in R&D as a developer.

With each core set, exciting reprints are unleashed onto the Standard environment. Magic 2015 continues this tradition, with many cards that have tournament pedigree. This week, Daily Decks will look at these cards, and the successful tournament decks that allowed these cards to shine in the spotlight.

Today's deck is built on Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth. While playing four copies of a legendary land can be dangerous—multiples will not help you make land drops—this deck is so potent at leveraging the fact that all of your lands become Swamps. In 2007, Guillaume Wafo-Tapa won Pro Tour Yokohama with a Blue-Black Control deck that takes advantage of the many aspects that Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth provides.

First, Urborg is a mana fixer that allows you to play spells that have multiple black-mana symbols without other black-producing lands. I'm sure that Guillaume cast more than one Damnation with Island, Island, Island, Urborg. The other major role of Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth was powering up Tendrils of Corruption. Simply glancing at the decklist, it looks strange for a Pro Tour Champion to play a solitary Swamp in a deck with Tendrils of Corruption. However, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth is that great. Since its printing, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth has been commonly played as a one-of in many different black decks to both allow for heavy black commitments and to avoid drawbacks on cards like Mana Confluence.
