Max Brown's Abzan Collected Company

It's hard to believe that the last Modern event I played in was Pro Tour Born of the Gods in Valencia, Spain, over a year ago! I remember testing Abzan Pod extensively for that Pro Tour. While I ended up playing a different deck at the event, Abzan Pod was always a deck I enjoyed playing in Modern. It dominated the format with its resiliency and easy-to-assemble combos, and it was no surprise to me when I learned that Birthing Pod would be banned at the next Banned and Restricted Announcement for Pro Tour Fate Reforged. Since then, I tried brewing a Birthing Pod deck without its namesake card, but could never get it to work.

Dragons of Tarkir gave Abzan combo decks a new tool to work with in Collected Company. In Max Brown's Abzan list, he uses Collected Company in combination with Congregation at Dawn to assemble an infinite life combo with Kitchen Finks and either Anafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit or Melira, Sylvok Outcast. With these creatures plus Viscera Seer in play, you can gain infinite life by sacrificing the Kitchen Finks and returning it to play with persist. The Finks will return to play without a -1/-1 counter thanks to Anafenza or Melira. You can repeat this process as many times as you want and gain two life each time.

Max's deck also plays a variety of one-of creatures that are good in different situations. Congregation at Dawn allows you to find whatever creature you might need at any time. My favorite thing about this deck is that, unlike most combo decks, you don't need to draw your combo to win. This deck plays great, efficient creatures…and if you don't get your combo online you can always kill your opponent by beating down.
