Our new Magic: The Gathering World Champion is Seth Manfield, and many of you know that he piloted Abzan Control in Standard to a first-place finish. While Standard was the format in the single-elimination rounds, people tend to forget that Worlds is multiple formats—players need to be skilled in Limited and Modern in addition to Standard. Today's deck is the deck that our World Champion chose to play for the Modern portion of the event.

Hexproof Auras is all about playing an early creature with hexproof and then suiting it up with lots of enchantments. Hyena Umbra and Spider Umbra are your most important cards, because they protect your creature from dying to mass removal or direct-damage spells. If your opponent casts a Wrath of God or some other way to destroy your creature, you get to keep it and remove an Aura instead.

Most of the Auras in this deck provide a huge power and toughness boost for a very low mana cost (such as Ethereal Armor), or lots of keyword abilities (such as Rancor and Daybreak Coronet). Most Modern decks play targeted removal, like Lightning Bolt or Path to Exile, and while these are some of the strongest cards in Modern, they are useless against a hexproof deck. Additionally, racing and chump-blocking is impossible against creatures that have trample and lifelink.

This deck does have a huge weakness to black decks. While it's really difficult to kill hexproof creatures, most black abilities can get around hexproof by using sacrifice effects. Liliana of the Veil is a popular card in Modern, and having one in play is bad news for a hexproof player. Cruel Edict, Geth's Verdict, and even Gatekeeper of Malakir are great against this strategy, and those cards are very playable in Modern.

Most World Championship competitors chose to play Control strategies, Affinity, or Splinter Twin at the event and opted not to play black cards, which was great news for Seth. Hexproof Auras was a fantastic metagame call, and the deck served him very well last weekend.
