Modern White-Black Tokens

I was happy to see White-Black Tokens make Top 8 of a Premier Modern event last weekend. It's one of my favorite decks to play in Modern; it has many great matchups and it's lots of fun.

Bitterblossom, a card that dominated Standard for two years and was immediately banned in Modern upon the format's announcement, was unbanned over a year ago. Many players thought that this unbanning meant the return of the most powerful Bitterblossom archetype, Faeries, but players quickly discovered that Faeries was not really viable in a format full of Snapcaster Mages and Lightning Bolts. Bitterblossom does have a home in White-Black Tokens, however, and it truly shines in this deck.

The deck's power doesn't come in the form of Faerie Rogue tokens, but rather in the form of Spirit tokens. Spectral Procession and Lingering Souls combined with Intangible Virtue are the cards that make this deck work. Backed up by hand-disruption spells such as Inquisition of Kozilek and Thoughtseize and a powerful late game in the form of four-mana planeswalkers, White-Black Tokens is really difficult for some decks to beat.

White-Black Tokens is also known for its awkward mana base. In fact, black cards and white cards often don't work well together in Constructed decks for that reason. Many of the spells in the deck require both black and white mana early. Fetch lands and shock lands help a lot, but there's nothing more painful than cracking a fetch for a Godless Shrine and casting Thoughtseize. That play will set you back to 15 life on turn one. That's pretty brutal! Fetid Heath helps a lot in this situation, but even that's not a card you can afford to play more than two of.

I really like Will's choice of top-end planeswalkers in his list. Sorin, Solemn Visitor is the most important card by a large margin. Its main use is its +1 as an anthem for your team, and the lifelink will ensure that you will win any race. Elspeth, Knight-Errant is a great finisher and definitely not a card that you want to see more than one of in a given game.
