DailyMTG is catching you up on some of the best articles from the past year while our whole crew enjoys the holidays. We’re replaying some of our authors' most popular works and some of your favorites December 15–26, but don’t be surprised if we have a special present or two for you somewhere during the holidays…

But in the meantime, enjoy the best of 2014. Happy Holidays!

When you ask most players what they think the best deck in Standard is, Mono-Black will likely be the most popular answer. However, these players are generally referring to a devotion deck featuring Desecration Demon and Gray Merchant of Asphodel. Today's deck, while still mono-black, is strategically much different than the Black Devotion decks that have had so much success in Standard for the past year.

This deck has no creatures! No Pack Rat. No Lifebane Zombie. No Desecration Demon. These staples of Mono-Black Devotion are nowhere to be found. Instead, this deck is fueled by the card drawing provided by both Sign in Blood and Underworld Connections. However, these cards cost life points, as does Thoughtseize. This makes the lifegain provided by Corrupt vitally important, and is the reason you see Elixir of Immortality and Pharika's Cure in the main deck. Liliana Vess is a very important card in this deck, if only because she finds these important Corrupts for you.
