PAX Prime Spellslinging Kor

Last weekend at PAX Prime, we had a very special Spellslinging event. For those of you unfamiliar, Spellslinging events are where the general public can play Magic against well-known personalities. Usually these personalities are members of Magic R&D, but they can also be professional Magic players, content producers, or celebrities who play Magic. Normally, players would bring their own decks to the battle. The deck can be of any format: Modern, Standard, Legacy, or even Commander. The Spellslinger is prepared for anything!

PAX Prime was a little different. The players did not bring their own decks. Instead, we provided decks for each player, and those decks were based on themes from Zendikar. This week on Daily Decks, I'll be talking about each deck that players could choose from, as well as the Spellslingers' dreaded Eldrazi deck.

The event at PAX Prime was literally a Battle for Zendikar. The players had to help save Zendikar from the Eldrazi, who consisted of Magic R&D members, World Championship competitors, and even celebrities such as Wil Wheaton, Felicia Day, and Chris Kluwe! Players earned points for every win, and those points were used to unlock Battle for Zendikar preview cards. Players had a choice from three Zendikar-themed decks: Kor, Landfall, and Allies.

The Kor deck was our beginner deck. It's a fairly straightforward deck that plays a lot of early-game creatures and Equipment to beef them up. It's pretty common to play a Kor Duelist on turn one, a Kitesail the next turn, and then begin attacking for 4 on turn three. Any more Equipment on top of that can make this guy practically unbeatable.

The Kor deck also has a fantastic late game. Deathless Angel is a huge body that can protect your smaller creatures, and Conqueror's Pledge is great at flooding the board after your opponent has stabilized. Honor of the Pure is also fantastic in this deck, especially after a Conqueror's Pledge is cast.

My favorite story from the Spellslinging event happened while playing against this deck. My opponent had a board of Kor creatures, but I was holding my own with my Eldrazi Spawn. It was looking like I was about to turn the tables when my opponent cast and equipped a Pennon Blade to his Kor Duelist. The Kor Duelist already had a Kitesail, so suddenly I was staring down a 7/7 double-striking flyer. I died during the next attack step.
