Squee's Legacy

Despite the amount of people working on building Magic decks, there is always something that shows up that no one has ever seen before. In this case, I'm talking about the deck that won the StarCityGames Legacy Open in Indianapolis—Jund Depths.

Squee, Goblin NabobKennen uses the new legend rule to take advantage of the interaction between Dark Depths and Thespian's Stage, but in the meantime his deck functions like a normal Lands deck. However, his version also has some Jund elements, with Liliana of the Veil and Punishing Fire, plus he uses Smallpox.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I absolutely love decks like this. Kennen wastes absolutely no slots on extraneous copies of Punishing Fire or Raven's Crime. Instead, he uses Entomb as a toolbox to tutor for the things he needs. Maybe it's a Nether Spirit to block, a Punishing Fire to kill creatures, or a Raven's Crime to pressure combo decks. Sometimes you'll search for a Life from the Loam or a specific land to get back with Loam.

Of course, the true hero is Squee, Goblin Nabob. With Liliana of the Veil and Faithless Looting, you might need something to continuously discard and Squee fits the bill nicely. Sometimes you'll deal the killing blow with the legendary Marit Lage token, but we know who the real legend is.

Some versions of Lands are able to cripple their opponents and stabilize, but take too long to kill their opponents. Kennen has additional disruptive elements and a way to kill quickly. The Entomb toolbox gives him a ton of flexibility and Dark Depths provides the win condition. What's not to love?
