Battle for Zendikar Standard results are starting to pour in, and we are slowly but surely figuring out what is viable in the new format. Today's deck belongs to Gerry Thompson, a former Magic development intern at Wizards and a current Pro Tour player. Gerry has always been a deck brewer, and the deck he brought to the first Battle for Zendikar Standard Premier Event is certainly a brew.

Bring to Light was a card we played a lot of in the FFL (Future Future League, our internal Standard playtesting league). The card is great in a toolbox-style deck when you are looking for certain threats or answers in specific situations. As you can see from this list, Gerry is playing four copies of Bring to Light and a variety of one-ofs. There are sweepers, threats, ways to draw more cards, and a variety of removal spells and planeswalkers to search up with Bring to Light.

What really makes this deck work is its mana base. The majority of the lands in the deck are the Khans of Tarkir fetch lands, which are crucial in fixing your mana. For example, a Bloodstained Mire can of course find red and black mana, but it can also find green (Cinder Glade) and blue (Sunken Hollow). Each of the fetch lands is capable of searching for four different colors of mana, which is vital in making a five-color deck work.

The next cards that make this deck work are the planeswalkers. As you can see, Gerry chose to play four copies of Jace, Vryn's Prodigy and two copies of Nissa, Vastwood Seer. These are the early plays you need to help you filter your draws, find lands, and gain card advantage. With all of the fetch lands in this deck, your graveyard will fill up very quickly, and Jace can flip as early as turn three.

Five-Color Bring to Light is one of the most versatile decks in the format, and the deck is capable of answering anything thrown its way. It's a bit on the slow side, but once it finds all of its colors, it's nearly unstoppable.
