The Magic Super League is a weekly stream where well-known streamers and players battle for pride and glory. This week's Super League is the most intense one yet, in that each of the previous Leagues' top finishers have returned to play in a Super League Championship. Last week, the format was Standard, and there was a huge variety of decks among the competitors. You can check out the decklists here, but today I'd like to showcase one of the more interesting decks from the event.

Pro Player and Hall of Famer Paul Rietzl piloted a White-Black Midrange deck that consisted of a mix of control and aggressive elements. This deck plays a heavy amount of sweepers in Languish and Planar Outburst, and the creatures in this deck don't even mind getting hit by the sweepers as they each leave behind tokens when they die.

Sorin, Solemn Visitor and Gideon, Ally of Zendikar both have great synergy with the tokens that Hangarback Walker and Carrier Thrall make. Both of these planeswalkers buff your creatures and also produce creatures of their own. Both are also capable of winning the game by themselves, which makes these planeswalkers excellent in a midrange deck such as this one.

It looks like Paul predicted a very aggro-heavy metagame. Most of his cards are able to remove threats: Murderous Cut and Stasis Snare can take care of creatures, while Quarantine Field and Utter End help deal with any nonland permanents. This deck definitely has the tools to beat any permanent thrown its way.

Decks like this usually struggle against control decks. Control decks play very few actual threats, which means that most of the time your creature removal won't really do anything. Additionally, you play very few win conditions yourself, so each counterspell they play is devastating against you. Overall, White-Black Midrange is a metagame-dependent deck—but when it works, it's incredibly strong.
