Thune We Shall See

In a recent article, Carrie Oliver posted the decklist that won the first post-Magic 2014 Standard event she played in. While Carrie did not emerge victorious with BW tokens, going 3–3, she did report back on an interesting-looking GW deck.

The deck uses mana acceleration to ramp into a parade of threats, starting with Scavenging Ooze and going all the way up to Angel of Serenity. There is no shortage of powerful cards here, with Voice of Resurgence, Scavenging Ooze, and Thragtusk all easily making any list of top Standard cards, and the rest of the deck is not much further behind.

In classic midrange fashion, this deck looks to attack the control decks with Voices, Oozes, Advent of the Wurms, and Thragtusks, while controlling the board against aggro with many of the same creatures plus Selesnya Charm and Archangel of Thune.

Speaking of Archangel of Thune, it's a big reason that the deck seems sweet. With the Archangel itself, plus Ooze and Thragtusk for additional lifegain, the deck can easily turn its Elves and Voices into giant threats. It also takes advantage of the fact that it's got so many creatures by ramping into Garruk, Caller of Beasts, which is an awesome way to beat control and midrange decks.

The sideboard is basically all removal, either for creatures or graveyards, which shores up the weaknesses that GW traditionally suffers from. Especially in a wide-open metagame, I like that this deck has game against any point on the aggro-control spectrum, although I can see it having trouble with some of the token decks that have become much more popular. Craterhoof Behemoth could be a consideration, especially in tandem with another Garruk, Caller of Beasts , who can cheat the Behemoth into play early.
