Turn 4 Emrakul, Go

Modern is a format full of the coolest combos that Magic has to offer. While we try to prevent turn-three kills and un-fun win conditions, there are a lot of awesome things you can do in this format. Most of the top decks are "fair" decks, or decks that try to win by attacking with creatures. Sometimes I come across an obscure deck that tries to win by doing something a little more out of the ordinary.

Today's deck is one of those decks. Piloted by Nicholas Montaquila to a Top 4 finish at a recent Starcity Games Modern IQ, Green-White Trap plays an obscure combination of cards. Half of the deck is creatures that are either good at attacking or provide utility, like Nest Invader, Lotus Cobra, and Knight of the Reliquary. The rest of the deck is…Emrakul? What is this deck even trying to do?

As you may have guessed, this deck tries to either cast an Emrakul, the Aeons Torn or get it onto the battlefield as quickly as possible. There are two lands with hideaway that are good at accomplishing this goal. It's pretty easy to meet the requirements to activate one of these lands, and if you're fortunate enough to hide an Emrakul under it, you can actually cast it without having to pay fifteen mana. This deck can get an Emrakul onto the battlefield as early as turn four and, with the extra turn that comes along with casting Emrakul, it's pretty easy to close out a game with one attack.

I played this deck a lot back when it was in the now-retired Extended format. It's a blast to play. I've always had fun casting Emrakul on turn four, but there are plenty of other ways to win too. I'm glad to see it perform well in a high-level Modern event.
