I always like seeing Goblin Electromancer in decklists, especially "fair" ones that don't involve casting a giant Grapeshot. Playing with Sapphire Medallion was just a ton of fun, and Electromancer is basically a Sapphire Medallion with legs. Today's deck combines the cost reduction of Electromancer with the payoff of Young Pyromancer, all wrapped up in a RWU midrange shell. As you can imagine, I'm a fan of all of those things.

The main engine here is the creature package, with Electromancer and Pyromancer enabling each other and rewarding you for keeping up a steady flow of spells. Azorius Charm, Syncopate, Thoughtflare, Lightning Strike, and Mizzium Mortars all impact the board, which is another hallmark of midrange decks. Side note: I love that Standard has viable midrange decks. It contributes to the overall variety, and makes it a much more fun format than when it's all one-drop aggro and super-controlling decks.

Boros Reckoner; Chandra, Pyromaster; Ral Zarek; and Elspeth, Sun's Champion firmly ensconce this deck in the midrange category, much like the BUG decklist from earlier this week. The recipe of Planeswalkers plus solid midrange creatures plus removal is a good one, and all of these cards do a fine job on both defense and offense. The creatures fight against aggro decks and the Planeswalkers fight against control, with both categories being useful in all matchups to some degree. Plus, I just want to flip coins and take extra turns, in that order.

The sideboard is incredibly funny to me, since it's not every day that you see Hammer of Purphoros and Ætherling fighting side by side. A hasted Ætherling does sound awesome, and as both cards come in against control, it might actually happen. Past that, the deck gets more removal spells and some specific answers like Glare of Heresy and Pithing Needle, allowing it to cover its bases against any and every threat it might face.
