Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know for today, January 15, 2016. Today's Update is brought to you by extraordinarily long podcasts.

Today's Must See

  1. Oath of the Gatewatch World Premier | Wizards of the Coast

It feels a bit cheaty to post a video here from Wizards of the Coast, because that's, ya know, us, but where else are you going to see people playing with actual Oath of the Gatewatch cards?

I mean besides the Prereleases going on around the world starting tonight/now (hi, Japan!). And then all of the time once the set releases on January 22. But still, check it out. Also, Paul.

Prerelease blowout!

  1. Limited Resources 319 – Oath of the Gatewatch Set Review: Commons and Uncommons | Limited Resources | Marshall Sutcliffe and Luis Scott-Vargas

Juuuuuuuust under the wire for your Prerelease experience, Marshall and LSV are here with nearly five hours of reviews for commons and uncommons in Oath of the Gatewatch. Road tripping to your Prerelease? Marshall and Luis have got you. Planning to stare at your computer instead of accomplishing any work today? Marshmellow and Garvas Elscot are there for you. Want to not talk to anyone during FNM while you mentally prepare for a midnight Prerelease? Yup. They've got all the analysis of Loam Larva you'll ever need.

If your appetite for podcasts is less voracious, Brainstorm Brewery did their own set review, clocking in at a paltry one hour and 51 minutes.

  1. Oath of the Gatewatch Prerelease Guide: Everything You Need to Know – MTG! | The Mana Source | Wedge

Wedge caps off his marathon series of Oath of the Gatewatch videos with a Prerelease primer of sorts useful for players new to the Prerelease scene. Coming in at a brisk nine minutes, I suggest you watch it during one of your many breaks from listening to the marathon podcast from Marshall and Luis. Take a break. Stretch your legs. Stay hydrated. Learn about Prereleases.

  1. Oath of the Gatewatch Prerelease Primer | ChannelFireball | Paulo Vitor Damo Da Rosa

Easily one of the more anticipated Prerelease primers belongs to Paulo Vitor Damo Da Rosa. Aimed at a spikier crowd, Paulo runs through the set's abilities as well as a slew of overrated and underrated cards. If you're tight on time because you spent your entire day listening to Limited Resources, Paulo's "TL;DR" at the bottom sums things up succinctly.

After Those, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. Oath of the Gatewatch Commander Review! | StarCityGames | Sheldon Menery

I skipped posting this yesterday in order to highlight the cornucopia of Two-Headed Giant content going up (also apparently skipped: learning how to spell "cornucopia"), but Sheldon's regular reviews for Commander often set the tone for what Commander players are looking at in a new set. The article is long and exhaustive (and exhausting), but you won't get a more complete look anywhere else.

Additionally, anyone jonesing for more in the realm of Commander-centric reviews of Oath can also check out Tomer Bramovici's series on Part 1 and Part 2.

  1. By Proxy—Using Proxies in Events, Pithing Needle problems & more! | The Magic Show

There was quite a bit of news to talk about this week, so Evan Erwin, Erin Campbell, and Reuben Bresler took to their Magic Mics to discuss an array of issues. We unfortunately scooped them a little bit when Elaine Chase clarified some things about proxies and playtest cards, but don't hold that against them.

But, hey, if you like unfiltered discussion about things Wizards of the Coast (that's us!) is doing wrong (and even sometimes right!), plus news that affects the Magic community, give Evan and crew a view or two.

What People Are Talking About

Prereleases are already happening! While a good chunk of our audience is in the United States and Europe, our friends in Asia have already begun cracking packs! I may not know what they're tweeting half the time, but following Tomoharu Saito and Shuhei Nakamura on Twitter always feels a bit like looking into the future come Prerelease time.

Also, New Zealand has already finished their first round of Prereleases (lucky...), and Redditors from that side of the world have all started to chime in on the experience.

  1. The Smashing Reality of Reality Smasher | Podgypanda

Reality isn't always so smashing, and this Reddit thread seems to agree.

  1. That's What They Said

Tumblr is probably the most adorably creative place on the internet, and is pretty high on the adorable scale. Sample "quote":

Sarkhan: Alright, I brought back dragons! Look at this, Narset. Isn't it great?
Narset: People are dying, Sarkhan.
Sarkhan: I know, the coolness is practically killing me too!
Narset: Sarkhan, no.

Deck of the Day

  1. Master Transmuter taking on...Vintage?!

Now that Wizards of the Coast is done attempting to destroy Vintage, it's time to showcase some real innovation in the format. Magic Online user Oddseidank finished 3-1 in the January 14 Vintage Daily with a deck focused on Master Transmuter and featuring four Chromatic Lantern. There's a lot to unpack in whatever is going on in this deck, but it looks, to my discerning eye, like Oddseidank is looking to abuse Transmuter with things like Sundering Titan, Triskelion, and Myr Battlesphere, while keeping his opponents in check with Nether Void, Trinisphere, Ethersworn Canonist, and Abrupt Decay.

If you've never been locked under a Nether Void while your opponent has free reign to get things into play as they please, well, then I envy you. It's not a story I'll share with my grandchildren.

The deck also contains Stoneforge Mystic to grab Batterskull, which can then bounce back and forth thanks to either the Mystic herself or Transmuter.
