The January 20, 2016 Update

By Blake Rasmussen

Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know for today, January 20, 2016. Today's Update is brought to you by Frank Karsten's super math and the year 2004.

Today's Must See

  1. MTG Lore: Nissa's Fate | SeibenMTG

Behind on the Battle for Zendikar and Oath of the Gatewatch story? SeibenMTG catches you up on Nissa's story so far as told in Official Magic Fiction. Not behind on the story? Still worth it for the recap and his storytelling voice.

After That, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. MtA Episode 156: Let's Get Wasted| Magic the Amateuring | Maria Bartholdi and Meghan Wolff

The Magic the Amateuring crew podcasts live from their Prerelease over the weekend. There's also something about koalas. I don't know. Just listen.

  1. Modern Flashback Series: Fifth Dawn | PureMTGO | Vincent Borchardt

PureMTGO has been all over the Year of Modern Flashbacks on Magic Online, and their latest batch of content parties like it's 2004 with multiple articles on Mirrodin-Darksteel-Fifth Dawn drafting.

  1. Oath of the Gatewatch Set Review: Red and Multicolor | TCGPlayer | Conley Woods

Luis Scott-Vargas doesn't get to have all of the set-review glory. Conley Woods is running through the cards in Oath of the Gatewatch as well, and today he's on red and multicolor.

Top 25

  1. Prereleases shockingly change nothing in the Top 25

Somehow Prereleases and their whopping 0 Pro Points available didn't shift the Top 25 one iota. And that's all that needs to be said about that.

Absolutely the Last Bannings-Related Item I'll Post. Maybe.

  1. SPLINTER TWIN BANNED?! (also Summer Bloom) | Masters of Modern | Alex Kessler and Ben Bateman

The Masters of Modern, Alex Kessler and Ben Bateman, have been very active on Twitter spurring discussion of the bannings in Modern, but now those discussions get verbal as the pair podcasts their thoughts away in the latest episode.

That said, if you're really salivating for more content on the Modern bannings, has several premium entries today, including articles from both Shaun McLaren and Sam Black. The Sam Black one in particular is worth reading (again, if you have access to premium content), as he spoke with Magic Principle Game Designer Erik Lauer for some inside info.

Community Spotlight

  1. Unspoken Realms

Unspoken Realms is a fan-made site that takes the stories from Official Magic Fiction—what used to be called Uncharted Realms—and turns them into podcasts!

What People Are Talking About

One of the cool things about doing the Daily Magic Update is stuff like this. Did I miss calling out Josh in yesterday's Update? I sure did. Do I (and by extension now, you!) know how awesome and important he is to cool Magic content? I/we do! I'm working hard to show off as much of our community as I can, but I always want to hear from you about people and items I might have missed or that you think we should highlight!

Josh, your videos are awesome and you're awesome. Here's an example from a few days ago!

Yesterday we announced that we would be returning the Pro Tour Top 8 to best-of-five matches, starting with Pro Tour Oath of the Gatewatch. Check out the stream Feb. 5–7 on to catch all of the action and see how this shapes Sunday coverage!

Deck of the Day

  1. Eldrazi Invade Modern

If you've played much Modern on Magic Online lately, then you've likely been invaded by the otherworldly Eldrazi a time or twelve. Phreshtingz's take on the archetype is fairly stock, but beware that having your card processed out from under Tidehollow Sculler is just as bug-eye inducing the 27th time as it is the first.
