The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on January 27, 2016. Today's Update is brought to you by weird, brutal blasts, the weekly Top 25, and Tooth and Nail for a God and a Multiversal horror.

Today's Must

  1. Limited Resources 321—Oath of the Gatewatch Initial Impressions | Limited Resources | Marshall Sutcliffe and Luis Scott-Vargas

Now that the set is released and they have a few drafts under their belt, Marshall and Luis share their initial impressions of the format in a taught 86-minute podcast. I'm not sure how they got it down that short, given that the discussion of Loam Larva alone probably takes 85 minutes, but that's why they're the podcasters and I write pithy blurbs about podcasters.

After That, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. MtA Episode 157: PPTQ Blues | Magic the Amateuring | Meghan Wolff and Maria Bartholdi

There are so many topics going on in this podcast, I have no idea how to write the summary. Mostly it's PPTQ stuff, but then there's some kind of licking game and something about Dark Confidant. Just go listen to it.

  1. Top Ten Oath of the Gatewatch cards for Modern with Brian David-Marshall | Masters of Modern | Alex Kessler and Ben Bateman

Brian David-Marshall, he of the Pro Tour and this here website thingy, joins the Masters of Modern crew to pick apart the best cards for Modern from Oath of the Gatewatch. Spoiler alert: Loam Larva does not make anyone's list.

  1. Hot Decks from New Standard | TCGPlayer | Seth Manfield

Standard is just getting started with Oath of the Gatewatch, but your reigning World Champion, Seth Manfield, is already digging in deep with the best Standard decks to emerge so far. He has one clear frontrunner—you get one guess, Sam Black—and a number of other contenders to consider. Somehow my Loam Larva recursion strategy isn't among them.

  1. Standard Power Rankings | ChannelFireball

Speaking of early returns on Standard, did you know ChannelFireball puts out power rankings from time to time listing cards that are making waves in Standard? This week, five new entrants jump on the list—appropriate, given the new set—and you'll never believe which uncommons top the list!

Or maybe I should go with: These 8 Weird Cards Will Make Your Opponent Hate You!

Other Corners of the Internet Talk About Magic

  1. Magic: The Gathering's Latest Set Is a Weird, Brutal Blast | Nerdist | Kyle Hill

Thanks for the review, Kyle! Now I know what we're naming our company kickball team—Weird, Brutal Blast!

What People Are Talking About

Shockingly, another edition of Sperling's Sick of It got people talking. If you're not familiar with that column, the title is fairly self-explanatory. Matt Sperling complains about stuff he's sick of. In this edition, he discussed the change allowing players with 6-3 records to make Day Two. Previously, only players who finished 7-2 made it to Day Two.

That's right, you can start playing Oath of the Gatewatch this Friday on Magic Online! What new mana system is Worth talking about? You can read a bit more about it in Alli Medwin's article today and in yesterday's Magic Online Announcements.

Top 25

9.Magic Top 25

With no major Pro Point-granting events last weekend, the Top 25 remains unchanged. Look for some small changes next week as Grand Prix happen in Mexico City, Nagoya, and Vancouver, and then look for some titanic shifts the following weekend after the Pro Tour.

But for now, enjoy this chart.

Deck of the Day

  1. Modern Overgrowth

Modern Green Devotion has been around for a while, usually featuring Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and cards with a lot of green mana symbols, such as Leatherback Baloth and Wistful Selkie. But Magic Online player Uegjo went a slightly different direction and emphasized the land untapping that green has gotten so good at. With Voyaging Satyr, Arbor Elf, or Garruk Wildspeaker, you can load up a Forest with Utopia Sprawl and Overgrowth to create a ton of mana. And since your targets are usually basic Forests, you can dodge Tectonic Edge and Fulminator Mage. Just watch out for Ghost Quarter. At any rate, it's cool to see someone go 5-0 with Tooth and Nail once again, and Toothing up Xenagos, God of Revels and Emrakul, the Aeons Torn seems like a massively good time.
