Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on January 26, 2016. Today's Update is brought to you by puzzling your way to a 1-2 finish.

Today's Must

  1. Interview: Kimberly Kreines & Melissa Li of Magic: The Gathering | Gadgette | Sammy Maine

Two of our creative designers—Kimberly Kreines and Melissa Li—talk work, science, Oath of the Gatewatch, working as women in the gaming industry, their process for creating and working with Magic's characters, and the Green Bay Packers.

The Packers suck (Skol Vikings!), but this article most certainly does not.

After That, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. This Is That: Oath of the Gatewatch | MTGGoldfish | Jake Stiles

I've been reading Magic content a long time. Longer than some of you have been alive. So it's rare I find something unique. Now, maybe things like this have been done before—it is a pretty simple concept after all—but if so, I haven't seen them. "This Is That" looks at the design space Oath of the Gatewatch has explored through reprints, cards that are generally better, generally bigger, generally smaller, and generally worse, and those that are wholly unique. It's a good way to give you a baseline of what a card is capable of, and a handy way to creatively spur some ideas.

  1. U/R Prowess Standard Deck Tech—Oath of the Gatewatch—MTG! | The Mana Source | Wedge

This video gets my vote for calling Atarka Red the cockroach of the format. It also happens to highlight a new entrant into the Standard format with Blue-Red Prowess, a deck we saw perform well at the Atlanta Open. For more on the deck, you can see another deck tech from that tournament featuring Ross Merriam.

  1. Shadows over Innistrad: Theory| Seibenlore

What, Release events for Oath are over so we're already on to Shadows over Innistrad? We haven't even had the Pro Tour yet! Oath only comes out on Magic Online this week!

Oh well. If you're not the type to slow your roll and smell the roses and all that jazz, and you really want to start speculating on Shadows over Innistrad, we won't stop you.

So how much did Seibenlore get right? Ha, nice try. I will give you this one, exclusive bit of information—he got the name of the set correct. Shh. Don't tell anyone.

  1. The Diary of a Pro Player—Limited Prep | ChannelFireball | Pascal Maynard

Pascal Maynard is giving you a look deep inside his Pro Tour preparations. None of it involves a Tarmogoyf.

What People Are Talking About

  1. The Legions Prerelease was 13 years ago today. Mistform Ultimus is now officially a teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. | Reddit

Happy Birthday Mistform Ultimus! We got you a cake. Only you'll have to share it with Kelly Digges.

Over the weekend, AJ Sacher and Reuben Bresler took an eleventh-hour flight of fancy—almost literally—and came to do coverage of the Super Sunday Series. That was where their story began—but was it the whole story?

[Note: I can't believe I have to say this, but Good Gamery is a parody site, much like The Onion. But for Magic. It's actually pretty funny. I mean, I laughed at "The Top 2 Pheldagrifs in MTG History."]

What to Watch Tonight

  1. Vintage Super League

It's Week 6 (of 9) in the Vintage Super League, and some of the best players in the world will be slinging some Vintage spells. If that doesn't get your hand reaching for whatever it is you watch on, well, then...okay. I mean we all have different likes and dislikes. It's okay. I respect your choices. But I do recommend checking out the Vintage Super League if you're curious. It's a respectfully good time.

The action starts tonight at 6 p.m. PST (9 p.m. EST). If that's good for you, I mean.

Community Spotlight

Check out this fantastic Liliana cosplay from Fauna, a regular Magic cosplayer with a bevy of Magic characters under her belt, many of which you can check out on her Facebook page.

Deck of the Day

  1. Sea's Claim

Sea's Claim just came thiiiiis close to winning a Modern Classic. Like, really close. Second place, close. Temur Delver might have taken home the trophy, but the Fish got a moral victory with second and third place finishes. Does this foretell a fishy finish for someone at Pro Tour Oath of the Gatewatch? Or will the Fish fail to find the feature match tables and instead fall into failed...okay, you get the idea.
