Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on January 29, 2016. Today's Update is brought to you by yoga mats turned shoulder pads, episode-long Kamehamehas, and a weekend's worth of Magic viewing.

Today's Must

  1. Cosplay: Narset Transcendent | GatheringMagic | MJ Scott

This is awesome.

Look, real talk, I'm not a cosplayer. I'm not that creative, crafty, or artistic, and I squirm any time I have my photo taken. It's not my thing. But this article still made my eyes bug out, and I'm pretty sure I audibly exclaimed "Wow" at multiple points. In this piece, MJ Scott takes you through the entire creation of her Narset Transcendent cosplay, including detailed pictures showing how she created the costume and more. For anyone with even a passing interest in cosplay, or even no interest whatsoever, this article is just plain great.

After That, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. Leaving Las Vegas—Reuben & AJ's Excellent Adventure & More! | The Magic Show | Reuben Bresler, Evan Erwin, and Erin Campbell

Reuben discusses his (and AJ Sacher's) wild ride to cover the Super Sunday Series. It's of particular interest to readers of this feature, as it's very community-centric.

  1. Top 5 Best Magic: The Gathering Lands that could have been Zendikar Expeditions! | The Mana Source | Wedge

I lobbied hard for an Island Expedition, but everyone was all "Aren't those basically just foil, full-art basics?" Whatever.

The real answer to many of Wedge's suggestions is that the Expeditions were flavored as if they were on Zendikar, and some of those are plane-specific. Otherwise we would have been all over that sweet, sweet Aysen Abbey Expedition.

  1. Reckless Bushwhacker—Immediate Impact | Top Level Podcast | Patrick Chapin and Mike Flores

Possibly the Spikiest podcast around, Top Level Podcast is the baby of content creators extraordinaire Patrick Chapin and Mike Flores. This episode is all about the most reckless of bushwhackers and its impact on Standard.

  1. Brainstorm Brewery #181—What Do You Call eBay in Canada? | Brainstorm Brewery | Ryan Bushard , Corbin Hosler, Jason E Alt, and Marcel White

The crew Kamehamehaaaaaaaas for like an hour, then spends five minutes on Standard and Modern results. Or maybe it's the other way around.

  1. Oath of the Gatewatch—Pauper Picks | Pauperganda

With Oath of the Gatewatch now on Magic Online, many players are turning toward Pauper options, especially after the format was shaken up with the banning of Cloud of Faeries. Here, Pauperganda picks through the options to keep an eye on in Oath of the Gatewatch. Still no love for Loam Larva.

What People Are Talking About

Grand Prix Vancouver is this weekend! (So is Mexico City and Nagoya!) Apparently, so is Dine Out Vancouver. If you're making the trip to Vancouver this weekend, be sure to take advantage. If you're not, be sure to watch the stream on!

With Cube ending today, conversations are switching awesome Cube is. I guess.

Ethan, if you don't know, is an R&D stalwart and the lead designer on Oath of the Gatewatch, so voting on his polls is basically like pitching in at R&D.

What To Watch This Weekend

  1. Grand Prix Vancouver and SCG Columbus Highlight Weekend

What: Grand Prix Vancouver
What: The first taste of Limited since the release of Oath of the Gatewatch
When: Saturday coverage starts at 2 p.m. PST (5 p.m. EST/10 p.m. UTC), continues Sunday

What: Columbus Open Weekend
What: Week 2 of Oath of the Gatewatch Standard takes center stage
When: Saturday coverage starts at 10:30 a.m. EST (7:30 a.m. PST/3:30 p.m. UTC), continues Sunday

Deck of the Day

  1. The First Post-Bannings Modern League—Brought to you by Worldly Counsel

The first Magic Online League results for Modern after the bannings took effect are starting to trickle in, and the first set of results had at least one semi-surprise. Sandwiched between two 5-0 Affinity lists was a Bring to Light Scapeshift deck with a few interesting card choices—notably Hunting Wilds, Painful Truths, and Worldly Counsel. You'll notice the complete lack of Splinter Twin hate in the sideboard, and a main deck that would otherwise be pretty soft to that combo. Also note the use of the Battle for Zendikar dual lands—Cinder Glade and friends—in a Modern mana base.
