The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on February 5, 2016. Today's Update is brought to you by, what else, Pro Tour Oath of the Gatewatch...happening right now!

It's Here!

  1. Pro Tour Oath of the Gatewatch

Merry Chri...I mean, Happy Pro Tour Weekend! Pro Tour Oath of the Gatewatch is finally here, and by the time you're reading this, it's already happening!

If you're not already watching (Work? Psht. Some excuse.), you can tune in all weekend on twitch.tv/magic. The Modern format looks quite shaken up by the twin forces of Oath of the Gatewatch—which is certainly making its presence felt—and the recent bannings. Will the Eldrazi reign supreme? Can they be stopped by tiny robots or infectious Elves?

Watch or check out the coverage page to find out!

What People Are Talking About (Hint: It's the Pro Tour)

Will the Eldrazi run rampant over Modern? A lot of players and fans are starting to think so.

Slow clap, Jon. We approve.

So the Pikula family is #TeamPantheon. Who are you rooting for?

After Those, Read, Watch or Listen To

  1. MTG—The Best Magic: The Gathering Cards Ever Printed—Champions of Kamigawa! | The Mana Source | Wedge

It seems a little bit oxymoronic—best ever, Champions of Kamigawa—but hear Wedge out! The set actually had a lot of power in it, some of which took some time to reveal itself.

  1. Thopter Engineer Secrets | Top Level Podcast | Patrick Chapin and Mike Flores

If Standard is more your bag, Patrick Chapin and Mike Flores make the case for Thopter Engineer in their latest Top Level Podcast.

  1. The Diary of a Pro Player: Final Limited Rankings | ChannelFireball | Pascal Maynard

Want a leg-up while watching Limited coverage this weekend? Pascal Maynard spills all of his secrets for Oath of the Gatewatch drafting.

What People Are Talking About (Non-Pro Tour Edition)

  1. How I spend money (Magic edition)

Truth.

This comic rings pretty true for a lot of Magic players, but it was actually originally created for the author's love of books. You can see the original from Sarah Andersen here.

If the Pro Tour isn't your style, it isn't the only option to watch Magic this weekend! LoadingReadyRun will be broadcasting some Canadian Highlander action. It's a sweet format. Not as sweet as the Pro Tour, but, like, pretty close. Mulldrifter is legal in both, so it's close to a wash.

Deck of the Day

  1. Ascending to New Heights

If, as many pros are predicting, Abrupt Decay will be on the decline in Modern, now seems like a pretty good time to start breaking out the three-mana permanents, right? And since Jeskai Ascendancy is one of the most powerful three-mana permanents around, it might be time for a re-emergence. Parjona certainly thought so, and turned in a 5-0 performance in a Modern League with this masterwork.

How does it work? With an Ascendancy in play, untapping either Fatestitcher or an active Faerie Conclave with every spell nets you mana and cards every time, while growing that creature. That finds you more Fatestitchers, which nets more mana and more attackers. Eventually, you swing with a large enough creature and your opponent is dead in a flurry of cantrips.
