Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on May 3, 2016. Today's Update is brought to you by Arlinn Kord. It's about time she saw some play in a winning deck.

Today's Must

  1. Winners And Losers From #GPToronto | StarCityGames | Ross Merriam

Ross Merriam offers a succinct recap of what we learned about Standard from Grand Prix Toronto. We've got winners, losers, underrated, overrated—Merriam gets them all. If you can't make heads or tails of what Toronto did to the Pro Tour metagame—or if you're just wondering what you should play at Friday Night Magic—this is the article to read.

After Those, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. Drawing Live—What Is Magic? | Hipsters of the Coast | Zach Barash

Zach Barash asks—and partially answers—an intriguing question: What is Magic?

"A collectible card game, maybe the best in the world. Duh," you might say. Although I don't think people say "duh" anymore.

But what Barash explores are the various ways we play Magic, and whether Magic is something larger and more interesting than a specific set of rules and game pieces in card form. It sounds a bit esoteric (adj. intended for or likely to be understood by only a small number of people with a specialized knowledge or interest—kind of like the word "esoteric"), but if you're into that sort of philosophical thought process, this article delivers that.

Or does it?

  1. Is CoCo the New Twin? | ChannelFireball | Brian DeMars

Speaking of intriguing questions, Brian DeMars asks one of his own—though this one is a bit more grounded in actual gameplay. Collected Company has started to put up significant results in Modern, and DeMars is starting to wonder if Abzan Company has established itself as the default deck to beat in Modern—one that can win "fair" or with an infinite combo.

  1. MTG - A Buyer's Guide To Magic: The Gathering Products | Tolarian Community College | The Professor

The Professor runs through every way we sell Magic—and he doesn't pull any punches. He goes through the entire lineup and gives everything a grade, as well as whether or not it's worth it for players based on their experience and place in the game. The grades run the gamut from F all the way up to A+, and whether or not you agree with his assessments, it's an informative video with an overview of the various ways to get Magic cards from the store into your game experience.

  1. Podcast 067: Magic E-sports | MTGGoldfish | Saffron Olive, Chaz V, Richard

The MTGGoldfish crew gets together to discuss the future of Magic as an e-sport, what that means for the game, and what it can do to compete.

  1. Forgotten Lore: Urza's Destiny (Part 2: Impact) | The Magic Show | Evan Erwin

Evan Erwin—he of Gathering Magic and Magic Mics—is striving to create a series of Magic history videos. This one, on Urza's Destiny, is the first one in a while, so treasure it. TREASURE IT!

But, seriously, enjoy it, because Magic has a rich history, and Urza's Destiny did a lot to build it—and to harm it.

What People Are Talking About

This tweet from the Professor garnered a lot of responses (a lot, a lot), and caught the attention of Magic Online Digital Product Manager Lee Sharpe. There's still likely time to participate in this conversation, though you might want to tweet directly at Lee.

And if you don't feel like tweeting Magic Online suggestions at him, tweet at him anyway. He's an unabashed red player, so I suggest tweeting images of Timely Reinforcements, Kor Firewalker, or Circle of Protection: Red. I'm sure he'll appreciate it.

What to Watch Tonight

  1. Vintage Super League Returns

After a one-week delay, Vintage Super League returns tonight! Today's League action is actually the play-in tournament, where twelve players will compete for five open spots in the League. It's a large crew full of Hall of Famers, Vintage ringers, and longtime pros—including Kai Budde, Tom Martell, Paul Rietzl, Reid Duke, Bob Maher, Shuhei Nakamura, David Williams, and more.

Tune in tonight at 6 p.m. PT/9 p.m. ET to to watch the play-in action, then follow along every Tuesday at the same time as the league gets underway.

Community Spotlight

  1. The Burnished Hart | Tumblr

Specifically, I wanted to highlight the MTG Weekly Tumblr Recap, something the Burnished Hart does to—well, to do pretty much what I'm doing here: show you cool content from around the web you might have missed. The updates cover all of the internet, but they're also better at Tumblr than I am, so there'll certainly be better coverage of the happiest place on the internet there.

Deck of the Day

  1. Naya Planeswalkers—SCG Classic Winner

We have an Arlinn Kord sighting—and she brought some friends.

This deck, by Rob Birdsall, packs a whopping ten planeswalkers—twelve if you count Nissa, Vastwood Seer—two copies each of the best planeswalkers Naya has to offer. That allows it to act as the best Oath of Chandra—yes, that Oath—deck around.

From there, the rest of the deck is packed with removal and ways to protect its dozen planeswalkers—plus a couple Dragons just because. The 24 lands seems a touch low, but with Nissa, Vastwood Seer and Oath of Nissa both capable of grabbing lands, it likely plays out just fine.

Likely, because Birdsall used the deck to straight-out win the StarCityGames Classic in Milwaukee last weekend. It might not have the prestige of an Open, but it's no mean feat, and it earned him today's Deck of the Day.
