The May 12, 2016 Update

By Blake Rasmussen

Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on May 12, 2016. Today's Update is brought to you by Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, who is brought to you by Nahiri, the Harbinger, who is brought to you by Seth Manfield and Shaun McLaren.

And, no, that's really, very much not a story spoiler. They don’t let me do those here. It is, however, a Modern deck. Check it out below.

Today's Must

  1. Game Analysis: Esper Dragons vs. Black-Green Sacrifice | ChannelFireball | Reid Duke

When Reid Duke puts his head down and deeply analyzes any aspect of Magic, it's a must-read. His "Thoughtseize You" article from a few years ago, for example, was one of the best single-card strategy articles ever written. And, of course, his run on Level One, where he taught the basics of Magic, is one of the best in-depth teaching tools available.

So it's no surprise that this article—which analyzes a match between Luis Scott-Vargas and Shota Yasooka—is incredibly detailed and enlightening. Get inside the head of one of the best players of the world while he tries to get inside the head of two more of the best players in the world. And then insert a lazy Inception joke here. But then go read this article.

After That, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. Modern Nahiri Jeskai (Videos) | TCGPlayer | Seth Manfield

Nahiri, the Harbinger has been getting a lot of press lately as The Next Big Thing in Modern, mostly because she's so adept at summoning The Last Big Thing in Modern—Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. There have been a few articles about Nahiri lately, but starting with Seth Manfield seems about right these days. However, if you have Premium, Shaun McLaren has been on this deck like, well, like Shaun McLaren on a Jeskai deck. Which this is, so, um, no surprises there.

  1. Against the Odds: Squirrels | MTGGoldfish | SaffronOlive

You had me at Squirrels.

  1. The Best Magic: The Gathering Cards Ever Printed—Time Spiral! | The Mana Source | Wedge

While Time Spiral gets drafted in flashback drafts on Magic Online, Wedge comes in and talks some of the best cards from the set. Squire, somehow, does not make the list.

  1. Enter the Battlefield | Starburst | Ed Fortune

Starburst, which bills itself as "The World's Longest Running Magazine of Cult Entertainment," reviewed our bit of cult entertainment: the recently released Magic documentary, Enter the Battlefield. The review was glowingly positive, calling it a "fascinating insight into this sleeping leviathan of gaming," and giving it eight out of ten stars. Still no word on the royalty checks from my multiple appearances in the background.

What to Watch Tonight

  1. Community Super League

It's Thursday night, and that can only mean one thing.

A new episode of Grey's Anatomy!

Okay, so I suppose it can mean multiple things. In this context, it actually means a new installment of Community Super League on, starting at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET. This week's theme is Standard Tribal Wars—which apparently includes Nightmares. Good luck with that one, Wedge.

Community Spotlight

  1. Magic: The Parenting

We've put the spotlight on this podcast aimed at Magic players with kids before, but then they went away for a bit. Now they're back! You can listen to why they disappeared here, and then watch them frantically play catch up with a podcast a week later.

  1. Multiverse in Review

This is kind of cool for people who love old stuff. And Magic. And old Magic stuff. It's a blog where the writer reviews every single bit of Magic story from the very beginning. And we mean everything, including the old school books (Arena by William Forstchen is my favorite, and you can read this author's review here, though it casts much of the book in a whole new light.). The author has dozens upon dozens of these reviews, so it's very easy to get lost in a bit of a nostalgia trip catching up.

What People Are Talking About

Another reminder that, yes, we are coming up on Eternal Masters preview week, and it will be great. There will be only one week of previews, May 23–27, which means we're going to be stuffing a lot of cards into every day.

Deck of the Day

  1. Modern Dredge

With Modern Weekend coming up as Grand Prix Los Angeles and Grand Prix Charlotte take place in just over a week, we turn our attention to Modern and, specifically, to Dredge.

In this case, two new cards from Shadows over Innistrad seem to have given the archetype a kick in the pants, as Underground_Brazil took the list below to a 5-0 finish in a Magic Online League.

Insolent Neonate gives the deck another discard outlet beyond Faithless Looting and Lotleth Troll, plus a way to dredge with a draw. In fact, because you get to discard before drawing, that means Neonate can hypothetically discard Golgari Grave-Troll and immediately dredge it.

Prized Amalgam, however, is the real, um, prize, as it returns from the graveyard easily and readily. Whether Bloodghast, Gravecrawler, Rotting Rats, or Vengevine is doing the returning, it doesn't matter—free 3/3s can beat all but the fastest of decks.

Graveyard hate is probably a pretty tough beat for this deck—beating Rest in Peace has got to be difficult—but it can do a reasonable impression of a beatdown deck, curving Gravecrawler into Bloodghast or Lotleth Troll, into Prized Amalgam. If you get that kind of start and your opponent is hoping to slow you down with Rest in Peace, well, they're going to have a bad time.
