Chris is involved in a little bit of everything the communications team does, but focuses primarily on Magic Duels and running the social media accounts associated with that. So mostly that means he has way, way, way too many internet browser windows open at once.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on May 13, 2016. Blake is off on a rollicking adventure today, so Chris is covering the Daily Magic Update. Less rollicking, more cool links. You know the drill!

Today's Must

  1. Modern Metagame for the State Championships | TCGPlayer | Craig Wescoe

Modern is cool, but you know what's cooler? Like, a hojillion (REAL NUMBER DON'T QUESTION IT) different decklists breaking down the state of the format. Craig goes over some of the newest decks to make a splash in Modern, as well as the old standbys you can expect to see on the live tournament streams this weekend—more on that in a sec.

After That, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. A Word to Your Mother | Gathering Magic | Ant Tessitore

If you're reading this, it's already too late to call your mother and wish her a Happy Mother's Day. I mean, call her anyway because that's a good thing to do, but the day has come and gone. Now if you're looking to make your mother a mom-tribal deck, Ant Tessitore has you covered with a look at the mothers in Magic's history.

  1. Blue-Black Zombie Tribal Standard Deck Tech | The Mana Source | TMSWedge

I'm going to level with you right here: I will almost immediately approve of any deck that features Fleshbag Marauder. How can you say no to a face like that? Speaking of which...

  1. The Aristocrats of Rock | Gathering Magic | Steve Horton

Why does a deck that doesn't even run Indulgent Aristocrat get the title "Aristocrats"? Steve Horton shares a brief history of the Aristocrats-style deck and how its newest form—Black-Green Sacrifice—plays out in the current Standard. Spoilers: it plays out by getting an Ormendahl, Profane Prince out of nowhere and cackling with glee as you swing for 9 with an indestructible Demon on turn five.

  1. LoadingReadyRun's premium foil Shards of Alara draft | LoadingReadyRun

Ever have one of those sweet packs of Shadows over Innistrad with a rare and a premium foil rare? What if, like, all of the packs looked a bit like that? The LoadingReadyRun crew throws down with a very special Shards of Alara draft featuring all-premium packs, all while slinging their Canadian-born brand of charm.

  1. Roller coaster was a bit boring, so we thought some Modern would spice things up a bit | Reddit.

Roller coasters? Yawn, am I right? You know what's really thrilling is the Jund versus Merfolk matchup. Note: we do not recommend attempting to play with the Eggs deck in this kind of venue (because you wouldn't be able to finish a single turn while doing so).

What to Watch this Weekend

  1. Magic Madhouse Modern

Magic Madhouse will be streaming a Modern tournament tomorrow starting at 11 a.m. in London on That's 3 a.m. PT/6 a.m. ET for us in North America, so get the coffee going now. For your weekly fill of British accents, make sure you're tuning in.

  1. Indianapolis Open Weekend

Okay fine, so maybe you're in the States and you don't want to wake up incredibly early or stay up past your bed time to watch some more Modern play (we're in a no-judgment zone, don't worry). is holding their Indianapolis Open this weekend at The real question is whether or not anyone will be bold enough to bring along a deck featuring...

Deck of the Day

  1. Gaby Spartz's TriskaDECKaphobia

Gaby Spartz's Community Super League deck prominently featured a most fearsome card: Triskaidekaphobia. It focuses on whittling your opponent's life total to that magical 13 range. Burn spells, life gain, and more help you manipulate life totals for Triskaidekaphobia. With a little work, you can modify this deck for your Standard FNM! Brimstone Volley can be replaced with Fiery Temper, just to name an example. Also, be sure to note how many thirteens there are in this deck. If you can catch them all, you're definitely a super clever Magic person. Be sure to stay tuned for more Community Super League coming up soon! Something about these sentences is making me really uneasy, sorry if anyone noticed.
