The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on June 9, 2016. Today's Update is brought to you by Eternal Masters, which releases tomorrow!

Today's Musts

  1. The Importance of Opening Plays | Gathering Magic | Emma Handy

Yesterday was all about sequencing in Limited, today is about the first move in Standard. Emma Handy breaks down the importance of the first play, how to make your decision, and the implications of a misplaced—or strong—opening move.

  1. How to Mulligan: Vancouver Edition, Part 1 | ChannelFireball | Pascal Maynard

The art of the mulligan is one of the least understood and most difficult to master skills in Magic. In fact, best practices are even a bit different across formats, where the speed, tempo, and power level can vary greatly. Pascal has guidelines and scenarios to get you on the right track.

  1. How to Buy, Sell, and Trade Cards on Magic: The Gathering Online | Tolarian Community College | The Professor

This is the third in a series from The Professor on how to use Magic Online. In it, he discusses how to go about acquiring cards and trading cards away. The series (which starts with the basics of the system, then goes into building decks and gameplay) is an excellent resource for new Magic Online players or anyone interested in starting.

  1. Eternal Masters Removal | MTGGoldfish | Sameer Merchant

Sameer Merchant, continuing to do the work so you don't have to, has created a spreadsheet of every piece of removal—conditional or not—in Eternal Masters. Considering the high power-level of this set, there is a lot of strong removal to play around, only to get blown out by Balance. Because that is not a real card.

And if you want more tips and tricks for Eternal Masters, check out Jim Davis's "8 Cards to Watch for in Eternal Masters Limited" on today.

  1. MTAcast—Tips On Attending Your First Grand Prix and More! Magic: The Gathering Video Podcast | Magic the Amateuring | Maria Bartholdi and Meghan Wolff

Attending your first Grand Prix can be daunting. What can you do? Where do you go? What do you bring? Why do you, how do you, etc. Meghan and Maria are here—in video form—to give you a beginner's guide to enjoying these massive Magic celebrations.

  1. GP Costa Rica, and the GP Race | ChannelFireball | Brian Braun-Duin

Brian Braun-Duin is not remotely close to his first Grand Prix. In fact, he could be on the cusp of his first trip to the World Championship if he can close out the season as the Grand Prix Master. Currently sitting in third place, just one point behind Tomoharu Saito and Seth Manfield (and one point ahead of Reid Duke), BBD runs through his Grand Prix Costa Rica experience and his World Championship aspirations.

  1. Eternal Masters Release Notes | Judgecast | CJ Shrader, Bryan Prillaman, and Jess Dunks

Eternal Masters is a complicated set. Judges speak complicatedly. Enter: Judgecast. Several judges get together and talk about Eternal Masters' most complicated cards, such as Sylvan "don't Brainstorm me bro" Library and Isochron "split cards totally function" Scepter.

What People Are Talking About

Grand Prix Prague is this weekend! So is Grand Prix Columbus, but Prague will be the one streaming on Both Grand Prix are Legacy, so expect to see a lot of decks that look just like Andrea Mengucci's.

Oh, and we're trying something a bit new with our streaming set-up this weekend, intended to bring you more match coverage. Check out today's Organized Play for more on how we're looking to improve Magic coverage.

  1. EMA Token Text

Well that didn't take long. Puzzles never do with you people. You're all very smart and good looking. And persistent.

If you're not aware, Eternal Masters (which isn't even out yet, people!) contains tokens with a puzzle on them where the ad cards need to be assembled to show the full message. Now, someone has already puzzled it all together.

What to Watch Tonight

  1. Community Super League

Tonight's format is Ironroot Chef, in which our community competitors have selected a card with which to cook up a deck. Tonight's ingredients are Wandering Ones, Conflux, Inspiration, Satyr Hedonist, and Lich's Mirror. CSL starts tonight at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET on

Oh yeah, and there's a sweet video to tell you all of this in a far more interesting, creative way.

Deck of the Day

  1. Legacy Miracles

I played in my first Legacy Gauntlet event yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed myself, piloting Shardless Sultai to the finals before losing to Elves.

But the deck I most wanted to get, and the one I'll be starting to assemble after Eternal Masters releases (my first Legacy deck!), is Miracles, a deck named after the Avacyn Restored mechanic found on Terminus and Entreat the Angels.

The deck uses and abuses the top of its library like no other deck. Sensei's Divining Top, Jace, the Mind Sculptor, Brainstorm, Ponder, and even sometimes Predict (not in the list below) let you control the top of your library with ease. That, in turn, lets you get the most out of miracles as well as Counterbalance.

This is and has been Legacy's best control deck, and one that was slowly taking over the format. The rise of Eldrazi (pun only slightly intended) has made Counterbalance significantly worse, but this is still a deck to contend with, and one to watch this weekend as we cover Grand Prix Prague.
