The June 30, 2016 Update

By Blake Rasmussen

Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on June 30, 2016. Today's Update is brought to you by Naya, the cutest Planeswalker born literally yesterday.

Today's Previews

Throughout preview season, I'll use this space to highlight the day's previews that can't be found on DailyMTG. Worried you might miss something? We'll make sure to have it here.

  1. LoadingReadyRun

  1. European Wizards of the Coast Deck Check Column

If you're American or speak English fluently, you might not know that we have content in other languages as well. In this case, Deck Check previewed another monstrously terrifying emerge card.

  1. How to Evaluate Magic: The Gathering Cards (Eldritch Moon Preview / Spoiler Card) | Tolarian Community College | The Professor

A lesson and a preview card in one! The Professor does some of the best preview videos around, and this one is fantastically funny. Plus, you know, preview card.

  1. The Masters of Modern

They've streamed their card today right in the sweet spot between when this gets written and when it usually gets published (in our quick editing and posting stage), which makes writing this a touch awkward. The stream starts at 9:30 a.m. PT (12:30 p.m. ET), or maybe it started at 9:30 a.m.? Future Blake will know. Either way, you can check it out on, either live or on replay.

  1. Eldritch Moon Exclusive Preview: Lupine Prototype | TCGPlayer | Adam Yurchick

I've got no bone in this fight, but this might just be the coolest robot dog in the game. Check it.

  1. The Magic Duels subreddit

"It's not work if you enjoy it." That's how I feel about the Daily Update. Some days.

  1. Me! Yes, I have a Twitter preview card that I'll show off sometime today. And fair is fair—feel free to tweet #whereismypreviewcard at me until I reveal it.

After Those, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. Ask a Judge: Eldritch Moon Edition! | | Paul Baranay

Judge! My opponent's cards are scary!

That's probably not the kind of question Paul Baranay is answering, but he is covering Eldritch Moon, so you never know.

What to Watch Tonight

  1. Community Super League Finale

This is it, everyone. The big finale show for the Community Super League. Paul Cheon and Gaby Spartz start the action, playing best two out of three formats—in this case Pauper, Canadian Highlander, and No Banned-List Modern, as voted on by fans. The winner then has to do the same dance again with top-seed Kenji Egashira.

But wait, there's more! I've been promised some "plot twists" during the show as voted on by the audience. I honestly don't even know myself, so I'm curious to find out.

It all starts tonight at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET on

What People Are Talking About

So here's the deal—typically, players are able to obtain tourist visas when traveling to Pro Tours in countries that require visas. In Australia, a tourist visa is a relatively easy process taking just two or so days. Recently we were informed that wouldn't fly, and that players would have to obtain visas that are a bit more—involved. We're working with players to try and make sure everyone who wants to go is able, and if you're invited to the Pro Tour, you should be receiving communications from the Organized Play team. I know they're spending several sleepless nights trying to get this solved. Our coffee machine can attest.

Congratulations to Luis Scott-Vargas and his wife as they welcome their first child!

Deck of the Day

  1. Blue-Green Tentacles Crush Ramp

This deck has, virtually out of nowhere, become the darling of anyone looking to do something different in Standard over the past few days. Which is kind of funny, because there's a player in the First Friday video we produced back when the format first started with Shadows over Innistrad who was playing this exact deck. It's the first player interviewed in the video.

The deck looks to abuse the very powerful and very underplayed Crush of Tentacles, even going so far as to loop it with Den Protector. Is the deck good? Who knows. Is it a blast to play? Clearly.

There have been a few things written about it lately, but the videos from Seth Manfield posted today on TCGPlayer are especially worth watching.
