Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on July 29, 2016. Today's Update is brought to you by Australia, where there's a Grand Prix this weekend and a Pro Tour next. It's also where I, and a bunch of other people, will be traveling to next week. As such, the Daily Magic Update is going on hiatus for a week, since I can't be awake when the US sites update and all of the ringers who would otherwise step in for me will also be in Australia. We'll have an update on Monday to capture what happens over this weekend, but then the Daily Magic Update will not return until the following Tuesday.

I'll still try to highlight some cool content I find on Twitter, so if you're not already following me on there @blakepr, now would be an excellent time to do so.

What to Watch This Weekend

  1. Grand Prix Sydney

This is a big weekend. It's the first look at high-level Eldritch Moon Limited ahead of the Pro Tour. It's the conclusion of a thrilling Grand Prix Master chase. And it all starts—tonight! Thanks to Australia living in the future, coverage begins at 11 a.m. local time on Saturday—which is 6 p.m. here on the West Coast and 9 p.m. on the East Coast. Might I suggest asking your local game store to play coverage during FNM? Coverage will be on

  1. Baltimore Open

The Open Series features the second batch of Standard for the season, and the big question is, will anyone bring anything to defeat Spell Queller? Or are people still holding back ahead of the Pro Tour? Defeating our new winged counterspell isn't easy, so watch to see what players come up with starting 10 a.m. ET/7 a.m. PT on

Hey, Everyone, Have You Heard About Spell Queller?

  1. Spell Queller. Just...Spell Queller | Top Level Podcast | Mike Flores and Patrick Chapin

Flores and Chapin join the cacophony of voices touting the Spell Queller revolution in this week's Top Level Podcast. It's Spell Queller's world. They're just podcasting in it.

  1. Vintage 101: Gush Therapy | MTGGoldfish | Islandswamp

Vintage is an odd duck to talk about right now, but this one is worth reading if for nothing other than the first decklist in the article, which shows off a Vintage deck playing both Tamiyo, Field Researcher and Spell Queller. And not just a decklist as a sort of "what if we played this." It's a list from the Top 8 of a Vintage event.

So, yes, the Spell Queller revolution has arrived.

  1. Ross VS. Majors: White-Blue Spirits VS. Bant Humans | | Ross Merriam vs. Michael Majors

Some variation of these two decks look to be the top choices coming into this weekend for the Baltimore Open, so you can get a sneak preview of what the weekend is going to look like with this Vs. video. Though, there will probably be more Spell Quellers. Because there are always more Spell Quellers.

After Those, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. Zippity Doo Dah | The Girlfriend Bracket | Erin Campbell, Hallie Santo, Katie Neal, and Kriz Schultz

The topics this week: Eldritch Moon Prerelease stories, Lady Planeswalker Society celebrates five years, where Standard is going, the #WotCStaff policy, and event coverage updates. All in this week's episode of—The Girlfriend Bracket! (cue theme music)

  1. Promising the End | TCGPlayer | Ali Aintrazi

Because they can't all be Spell Queller decks. Can they? Here, Ali goes over his second-place finish at last weekend's Open with Sultai Control, as well as his Top 8 matches. Plus, an updated decklist.

What People Are Talking About

Good. Good. Welcome Maxine. We'll start saving Fact or Fictions and Doom Blades for you.

  1. The person who can combo anything

I had someone send me this comment in what was otherwise a normal "what if" kind of Reddit thread. But whoever sadisticmystic1 is, they're some kind of savant when it comes to coming up with combos. Not only do they come up with some incredible turn-one combos in this hypothetical alphabetized scenario, but if you check out their comment history, it's rife with combo commentary that's some Will Hunting-level stuff.

Decks of the Day

  1. Colorless Eldrazi Ramp

This one comes out of a Invitational Qualifier, where it took first place in the hands of Travis Morton, and it is not on many people's radars.

The deck is the natural result of pushing colorless-matters, but, in this case, it seems to have completely worked. There are zero cards in the deck that require red, white, black, green, or blue mana, which means the deck is jam-packed with utility lands—and Eldrazi.

Unlike some of the midrange Eldrazi decks we've seen, this is a straight-up ramp deck, and it appears colorless has the tools to do just that. Hedron Crawler has seen some play as essentially a Mind Stone, Hedron Archive is an all-star even in green ramp decks, and Oblivion Sower is wildly underplayed for its size and ability to ramp well past six mana.

Plus, the deck gets to play a ton of utility lands. Spawning Beds, Westvale Abbeys, Mage-Ring Networks, Foundry of the Consuls—while most decks have to dip their toes into those pools, this deck just gets to play four of each. That gives the deck a ton of play even when it floods. And when you're playing things like Warden of Geometries for even more ramp, flooding is certainly possible.

And the cool part? After a certain threshold, all of your business spells are Spell Queller-proof.
