Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on August 12, 2016. Today's Update is brought to you by Owen Turtenwald.

Today's Must

  1. One Incredible Weekend | ChannelFireball | Owen Turtenwald

Posted yesterday afternoon, this is a strong enough read that you shouldn't pass it up today if you haven't read it yet. Turtenwald is thankful, magnanimous, and honest in his assessment of his Hall of Fame career, his Player of the Year season, and his second-place finish at Pro Tour Eldritch Moon. It reads not only as a tournament report, but as a reflection on what it means to him to succeed at the game he loves.

The Pro Tour Gift Keeps Giving

  1. Single Card Spotlights

Coming out of Pro Tour Eldritch Moon, we produced a number of videos spotlighting interesting, popular, or powerful cards, as explained by the pros who played them. You can watch videos on Weaver of Lightning, Prized Amalgam, Ishkanah, Grafwidow, Liliana, the Last Hope, Tamiyo, Field Researcher, and everyone's newest nightmare, Emrakul, the Promised End, which you can also view below.

  1. Inside R&D

Also coming out of the Pro Tour is a look inside R&D (hey, the title is on the nose). You can view videos about the Eldritch Moon story, the mechanics, and the tribes.

After Those, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. Train of Thought | The Girlfriend Bracket | Erin Campbell, Hallie Santo, Katie Neal, and Kriz Schult

Kaya, Grand Prix Portland, Pro Tour Eldritch Moon, and PPTQs are the topics of the day in a tight 47-minute podcast. And since that's pretty much all of the newsy topics you could possibly want today, you should probably listen.

  1. Blue-Red Fevered Visions Deck Guide | ChannelFireball | Pedro Carvalho

Based on my experience in two-player queues on Magic Online, this is probably the most popular deck to come out of Pro Tour Eldritch Moon. You'd think everyone would pick up one of the emerge/Emrakul/Kozilek's Return decks, but I just keep staring down turn-two Thermo-Alchemists. Maybe it's just me, but this deck is really cool, and Carvalho is the one who, to borrow his phrase "crushed the Constructed portion" of the Pro Tour.

  1. Eldritch Moon Grab Bag | Limited Resources | Marshall Sutcliff and Luis Scott-Vargas

Fresh of a Pro Tour Top 8, Scott-Vargas talks about a variety of things, including what cards have changed in value since the Pro Tour. Marshall is there too.

  1. Elder Deep-Fiend into Elder Deep-Fiend (into Elder Deep-Fiend) | Top Level Podcast | Mike Flores and Patrick Chapin

In which Chapin and Flores talk about Elder Deep-Fiend chains for an hour. (In all seriousness, they talk Pro Tour, results, and the revelation of Kozilek's Return and emerge creatures.)

What People Are Talking About

Look, I'm a word nerd. These things are fascinating.

  1. Games Laboratory Conspiracy Crate Opening

Conspiracy: Take the Crown previews are almost here! Seven lucky stores were sent teaser crates and preview drafts. Watch for preview cards to start pouring out Monday. Every day next week will be themed after one of the set's major characters, starting with the queen herself, Marchesa, on Monday.

Deck of the Day

  1. Mono-Red Isn't Dead

It was all but absent from the Pro Tour, but reports of Mono-Red's demise appear to be premature. With everyone trying to cast a certain 13/13 for thirteen, going low to the ground is an angle worth exploring. It certainly worked out for Magic Online–player A_P_S, who went 5-0 in a Competitive League casting small red creatures and burn spells, just like Paul Sligh intended. This version even has the ability to meld Hanweir Garrison and Hanweir Battlements. So if that's your sort of thing—and I can't imagine why it would be—now might be the perfect time.
