The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on August 19, 2016. Today's Update is brought to you by a weekend of previews! The full Conspiracy: Take the Crown Card Image Gallery will go up Monday, and we'll have some special previews coming to you this weekend.

Today's Previews—Selvala Day

In addition to the previews you find on DailyMTG, there are a number of places around the web that will have preview cards themselves. I'll share the ones that have already been posted and point you toward what's coming down the pipeline over the rest of the day.

Today is Selvala Day, which means a ton of green and creature-centric cards are on today's docket.

  1. Regal Behemoth

Of course Australia previews a giant Lizard. At least this one isn't trying to kill you. It just sets things up so everyone else will be.

  1. It's a Conspiracy! | Gathering Magic | Mike Linnemann and Ant Tessitore

Some of the most gorgeous art to ever grace a Magic card. Oh, and the card is good, too!

  1. Conspiracy: Take the Crown Exclusive Preview—Birds of Paradise | Top Level Podcast | Mike Flores and Patrick Chapin

The title gives away a bit of the surprise, but it's still pleasant to see Birds of Paradise return. This iconic card is a staple in just about every format where it's legal, casual and otherwise. Chapin and Flores take the opportunity to tell some Birds of Paradise stories from the way back machine.

Spells? We don't need no stinkin' spells. Selvala just needs a few creatures at her side and the wilds singing heartily behind her.

  1. Wizards Play Network

For the third and final time this week, there's an update to the Wizards Play Network app on your local store's Facebook page! (If they have the app.) The link above will take you to the one from Face to Face Games.

Additionally, look for previews from the set's lead developer Ben Hayes, Elaine Chase, Wizards_Magic, and our team in China.

But Wait, There's More!

  1. Conspiracy: Take the Crown preview season isn't over yet!

This weekend, seven stores around the world are hosting exclusive drafts and sharing their live coverage with the world all weekend long. To get a first look at a full draft and games, keep an eye on social media this weekend. @Wizards_Magic and the Magic Facebook page will be posting new previews and highlights as they happen! If you want to get right up in the action, follow each store:

A ton of cards that you haven't seen will be involved in this draft, so keep a close eye out to what these stores have to show off!

And if you're one of the fortunate few that actually get to play in this draft? Congratulations, we're all jealous.

After Those, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. An Introduction to Proper Conduct in a Competitive Magic: The Gathering Setting | Magic the Amatuering | Meghan Wolff and Maria Bartholdi

This is a good one for anyone looking to get into competitive play to take a peek at. Meghan and Maria talk about what the best players do and how they act in a competitive setting to show respect and get the most out of the experience.

What People Are Talking About

Congratulations to Ryan Yee for winning a Chesley Award—awards given out to the best science fiction and fantasy art of the year!

This led to a lot of discussion yesterday about what the Community Cup has been and what it will be in the future. As Trick went on to say, we're trying a lot of different things this year—Community Super League, Streamer Showdowns, etc.—and still working to figure out the best implementation of showing off and playing with the best people and contributors in our community.

Deck of the Day

  1. Legacy Death and Taxes

With the printing of some choice new white cards in Conspiracy: Take the Crown, there's been a lot of talk about the white-based Death and Taxes deck in Legacy, so let's dig in a little bit.

The deck is, at its core, a disruptive white creature deck that uses cards like Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, Wasteland, and Rishadan Port to stunt the opponent's mana while also beating down with efficient and powerful creatures like Stoneforge Mystic, Phyrexian Revoker, Mother of Runes, and the always underrated Flickerwisp.

Æther Vial ties the whole package together, letting you utilize Wastelands and Rishadan Ports to your heart's content while still developing your board. And pushing out certain creatures at instant speed for free—Spirit of the Labyrinth, Mangara of Corondor, and Mirran Crusader, to name a few—can be game-winning.

This particular list comes from Magic Online player SpaceGoblin, who went 5-0 in a Competitive Legacy League with the deck.
