Today's Commander (2016 Edition) Previews

  1. In addition to the ones you can find right here on DailyMTG, there are a number of previews happening around the internet today.

What You Might Have Missed This Weekend

  1. Top Moments at the Grand Prix

We had two Grand Prix on opposite ends of the globe, as Kuala Lumpur and Providence hosted Standard tournaments highlighting the new Standard format. Check out the Top 5 moments from each:

But there was plenty more about the weekend that stood out. For example...

  1. Deck Tech: Exploring Magic (And Green-Blue Clues) with Chris Carpenter | Wizards of the Coast | Corbin Hosler

Not every featured deck has to be the latest cutting-edge technology. Sometimes, you just want to highlight sweet decks that are fun to play and pack enough punch to enjoy at a Grand Prix. Hosler highlighted one such deck—a Green-Blue Clues deck—and had a little fun with it.

After Those, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. Kaladesh: A Critical Review | TCGPlayer | Denis Stranjak

Stranjak, who you might know from the YouTube channel Windmill Slam, takes his talents to TCGPlayer to give a review of Kaladesh and ask a very pertinent question: "Is it Wizards' best set ever?"

  1. My Top 100 Cards of All Time! #50–41 | The Magic Show | Evan Erwin

If your favorite part of The Magic Show is watching Evan Erwin gush over cards, look no further! Also suitable for anyone who likes lists, Erwin's countdown of his Top 100 cards of all time has been in progress for a while now, but we're nearing the home stretch. Jump in, tell him how wrong he is on the internet ("Nobel Hierarch is way better than #46!"), and enjoy.

What People Are Talking About

  1. A Rebuttal: The Lifestyle of the Professional Magic: The Gathering Player | Gerry Thompson

Gerry Thompson wrote a moving, honest assessment of his life as a Professional Magic player. Touching, relatable for many, and worth a read for anyone.

There were a number of tweets like this over the weekend, but this one hits two fronts, so we'll use it to talk about both.

First, there was a discussion about what the term "reach" means in Magic when discussing decks having reach (and not talking about the keyword ability that lets you block fliers). There wasn't a consensus, but the options came down to, essentially, "direct damage" and "a plan for the late game." Use as you see fit.

The particular reach Eric Froehlich is talking about here is the ending to the finals of Grand Prix Providence. There, Wang Yichen defeated No. 3-ranked Seth Manfield with the activated ability of Ishkanah, Grafwidow to deal the final 6 points of damage.

Oh, and Ishkanah just happens to have literal reach as well, for more confusion.

You might have seen a lot of discussion this weekend about bribery and collusion (there's even a Reddit thread about it). This was the result of a disqualification of Oliver Tiu from Grand Prix Providence for bribery. I don't really have anything I can add on top of what the link says, so head over there and read the statement from the head judge.

This came out of Eternal Weekend in Europe. Remind anyone of a certain Diabolic Tutor?

Deck of the Day
